The PGMOL have issued a statement regarding ‘threats and abuse’ aimed at Michael Oliver after Wolves and Arsenal clash on Saturday.

Oliver received threats following his controversial decision to show Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly a red card.

The referee adjudged the teenager’s tackle on Matt Doherty to be worthy of a straight red card, a call that has been met by backlash and has sparked debates.

Following abuse aimed at Oliver, the PGMOL released a statement supporting the official and confirmed police are investigating.

A statement read: “We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture.

“No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.

“The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced. We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.

“Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations.”

Lewis-Skelly was sent off in the 43rd minute of Arsenal’s visit to Molineux, which saw the Gunners pick up all three points thanks to a second-half goal from Riccardo Calafiori after Wolves’ Joao Gomes also saw red minutes before.
