Britain to be battered by 4 storms this week as teen killed by Eowyn chaos
A 19-year-old man was killed earlier this week when a tree fell onto his car during the chaos caused by Storm Eowyn, however more bad weather is on the horizon
Britain is set to be battered by four more storms this week that could cause power cuts, travel chaos and floods.
There are set to be huge gales Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. It comes after the Met Office issued a “danger to life” alert, as the end of Storm Eowyn was in sight.
Tragically, a 19-year-old man was killed when his car was hit by a falling tree in East Ayrshire due to Storm Eowyn. The incident happened at around 6.45am on Friday (January 24), when the area had an amber weather warning for high winds.
Now, rush-hour chaos is due Monday from 1,000 mile-wide Storm Herminia, named by the Spanish Met Office, with 80mph gusts early this morning and 70mph during the day in the south and west. Up to three inches’ rain is due in the South by this morning, with 36ft waves off South-West coasts.
Wednesday will see new 60mph gales and washouts due in the South, while storm-battered Scotland and Northern Ireland are due further buffetings on Friday and Sunday. Met Office forecasters are on standby to name Storm Floris if one of the Atlantic weather systems have potential for amber warnings.
The new storms will hamper clean-up efforts as engineers work to restore power to a million homes cut off by 100mph Storm Eowyn, with thousands of fallen trees being cleared from roads and rail lines. Eowyn was parts’ strongest storm for up to 30 years, and had the most intense air pressure of any storm since 1900 in Northern Ireland, the Met Office said.
A Met Office forecaster said: “There’s little respite in the conditions. More strong winds are expected across the UK, particularly in the South. Herminia will hamper recovery efforts.
“Into Monday, gusts of 55-65 mph are possible, with a very small chance of localised gusts of up to 80mph, particularly near coasts.
“With rain falling on saturated ground in many places, warnings for wind and rain have been issued with travel disruption, flooding and power cuts highlighted.
“From Thursday, heavy rain and spells of strong winds are possible in north-western parts of the UK at times.”
Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “Rain will be an issue from Herminia and another system across the South on Wednesday, with flooding possible.”
The Environment Agency said: “Flooding is possible from surface water on Monday and Tuesday, and river and groundwater flooding is possible at other times. Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.”
