A top supermarket has recalled some of its breaded chicken products over fears they could be contaminated with salmonella.

Marks & Spencer‘s Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Burgers and Chicken Kyivs were recalled with an urgent “do not eat” warning issued to anyone who has bought the product after routine testing found salmonella bacteria in some of the products.

Salmonella can cause a range of symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting, a high temperature, stomach cramps and aches and chills. The NHS says: “Symptoms usually start within a few days of eating the food that caused the infection. Sometimes they start after a few hours or not for a few weeks.”

The affected products are the Marks & Spencer Crispy Southern Fried Chicken Burger and the Marks and Spencer 2 Chicken Kyivs with a use by day of January 26, January 30 and January 31. The recall was issued on Saturday (January 25).

Customers should note that only stores in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are affected. A statement from M&S reads: “Customer safety is of paramount importance to Marks & Spencer and we take all issues regarding the production of our foods extremely seriously. Please note only ROI and Northern Ireland stores are affected.”

The affected chicken burger products have the barcode number 29147168, while the chicken Kyivs have 00003063. M&S added that any customer who did buy the product can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given.

“Only the displayed codes are impact,” the statement continued. “No other M&S products are affected. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

The Food Standards Agency said: “If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).

“The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.”

Another product recall was issued on January 25 after Heineken UK wanted customers about “a small number of reports of the presence of glass fragments upon opening” bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale.
