Major UK grocery store tells 3,000 sacked Sainsbury’s employees ‘we’ll rent you’ days after job losses

Just days after Sainsbury’s announced it was sacking 3,000 staff and closing all of its own-brand cafes, pizza counters and more, a major rival has invited those impacted to apply for jobs

A major UK supermarket has offered a lifeline to 3,000 Sainsbury’s staff members who are set for the sack. The Daily Star reported on Thursday how the orange-branded supermarket was all 61 Sainsbury’s branded “Cafes” close, but food halls run by multiple brands – such as Carluccio’s, Five Guys and Harry Ramsden’s – would remain.

Around 3,000 staff members would go, while all patisseries, hot food and pizza counters would also be closed to make space for more “fresh food” areas.

A spokesman said: “As part of the company’s plan to become First Choice for Food. Sainsbury’s has shared plans to create space to offer more of its fresh food ranges in more stores.

“This will involve proposals to close remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters while making their most popular items available in the aisles.”

Bosses confirmed that all staff impacted by the moves and staff-cutting measures will be spoken to them, while some will be “redeployed” where possible.

However, rivals Iceland has issued an urgent call to those who could be jobless the chance to apply for one of 600 roles currently available across the brand.

Jobs include full and part-time positions, including retail staff, home delivery drivers, and management roles housed at the company’s North Wales head office.

A spokesman said: “While many in the retail sector are facing tough decisions, we’re proud to be creating opportunities and expanding our team as we grow across the UK.

“These roles reflect our ongoing commitment to investing in our business, our people, and doing the right thing by all those who make Iceland what it is today. We invite experienced retail staff and talented managers to come and join our team.”

The news also comes after Morrisons announced 200 jobs would be cut from its business – which makes around 3,200 people applying for 600 Iceland roles quite a competitive arena.
