Ruben Amorim says he’ll play ’63-year-old coach’ over Marcus Rashford at Man Utd
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim took a brutal swipe at wantaway striker Marcus Rashford in his post-match interview after snubbing the star yet again
Ruben Amorim and Marcus Rashford’s feud has taken another twist after the Manchester United boss claimed he’d play his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach over the forward.
The United manager, 40, saw his side triumph in a “lucky” 1-0 victory at Fulham, courtesy of a deflected goal from Lisandro Martinez. But Amorim didn’t mince words when it came to Rashford, suggesting he’d sooner turn to his coach Jorge Vital than the wantaway England ace, who’s not giving his all in training.
Amorim quipped: “It’s not 40… I’m 50! After two months at Manchester United it’s 50. It’s a privilege to spend my 40th birthday here. We missed a little bit of pace to go and change the game and move some pieces.
“But I prefer it like that. I would put Vital before I put the player who does not give the maximum every day so I will not change in that department.”
“It’s always the same reason. The reason is the training. The way I see what a footballer should do in training, in life, every day. If things don’t change, I will not change.
“Same situation for every player, if you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player,” reports the Mirror.
Rashford, however, sidestepped Amorim’s harsh words in his social media comeback, choosing instead to celebrate his squad’s triumph. Posting on Instagram, he said: “Congratulations on the win lads.”
The pair have had a strained relationship since the 27-year-old forward made the public declaration in December that he was looking for a “new challenge” away from Old Trafford.
Rashford, who has been at United since he was a boy, has not been involved in a matchday squad for six weeks. With the transfer window closing on February 3, it is unclear what the future holds for the Manchester-born ace.
Meanwhile, Martinez was a whisker away from an early bath after pulling off a two-footed leap at Fulham’s Adama Traore. Yet, he stayed on to net the winner.
Boss Amorim wasn’t about to tear strips off him, however. He said: “I cannot spend two months saying we need to be too aggressive and fight more and then say ‘Licha don’t fight’.
“The important thing is Licha doesn’t want to hurt another player. He’s committed.”
