The mother of the domestic abuser Ryan Welling, who urged his partner to commit suicide, has made a statement on the death of his son’s ex-girlfriend.

Wellings was convicted of assault and coercive and controlling behaviour over a two-year period against his ex-girlfriend, Kiena Dawes. However, Wellings was cleared of manslaughter after Dawes took her own life in 2022. Judge Robert Altham Honorary Recorder of Preston told Wellings he made Kiena feel worthless, blamed herself for being assaulted and that she was an “unfit mother”.

On Dawes’ life Judge Altham said: “Kiena Dawes was, according to the accounts of many witnesses, a popular, vicious, friendly and kind young woman. ” On Wellings’ abusive of the woman he said: “You would repeatedly hit her, in the messages, she pleaded with you to stop hitting her. Knowing her previous attempts at suicide and her fragile mental health, you repeatedly told her she may as well kill herself.”

Wellings has been described as “an entitled, aggressive bully” and a “horrible little b******” – friends of Dawes noted that Wellings possessed a jealous streak and did not like being spoken back to, reports Mirror.

His abuse of Dawes included regular slapping and “ragging” of her hair, threats to use a drill to take her teeth out and to “make her look like Katie Piper” by throwing acid in her face.

After Dawes became pregnant, Wellings gave her a black eye and began criticising her weight. During this time he contacted escorts and prostitutes online and called Dawes a “fat little b****”

Police were called on multiple occasions however Wellings threatened Ms Dawes that police would take their daughter away from them if she told them what was happening.

Wellings’ mother took to TikTok to defend her son and said: “He is very sad about it”, on Kiena she commented: “She was a very poorly girl.”

In a suicide note read to jurors Ms Dawes wrote: “The end. I fought hard, I fought long. I went through pain no-one could imagine. I was murdered. Ryan Wellings killed me. He ruined every bit of strength I had. I had dreams. I had a future at one point that was taken away from me.”
