Everton have added former Liverpool and Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam to David Moyes‘ backroom staff.

The 39-year-old has been appointed the Toffees’ new set piece coach, while Alan Irvine has reunited with the former Manchester United boss for his third stint as Moyes’ assistant manager.

Adam’s arrival at Goodison Park comes just one month after his brief spell in charge of League Two side Fleetwood Town. The former Scotland international won just 14 of his 49 matches in charge and saw his first foray into managed ended on December 22.

The former midfielder garnered the attention of Premier League fans during Blackpool‘s eye-catching 2010-11 campaign. Adam captained the side, managed by Ian Holloway, that came agonisingly close to avoiding the drop in their solitary season in the top flight.

Adam was lauded for his wicked set piece deliveries and was snapped up by Liverpool in 2011 following Blackpool’s relegation to the Championship.

However, he made just 37 appearances for the Anfield club before he was sold to Stoke City, where he would enjoy greater success in the Premier League.

Adam made 179 appearances for the Potters across seven seasons and remained with the club when they were relegated to the second tier in 2018.

Further spells with Reading and Dundee followed before he called time on his career in 2022.

The 26-time Scotland international joins an Everton side currently sitting in 16th place, just seven points above the drop zone.

Following the announcement of his arrival earlier this week, Moyes said he expects the former midfielder to bring quality to his coaching team.

‘Charlie is someone I have had several chats with since rejoining the Club,’ said Moyes in a club statement. ‘He will be helping with set-piece situations, an area he excelled in as a player and one I believe he can really help us with now as a coach.’

Adam will be in the dugout when the Toffees’ welcome his former side Liverpool to Goodison Park for the final time next month.
