James Carville Urges Democrats To Focus On ‘No. 1 Promise’ Donald Trump Is Failing To Deliver

James Carville believes President Donald Trump’s campaign promise about food costs and his failure to lower egg prices can help Democrats regain voters’ trust ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The longtime Democratic strategist joined News Nation’s Chris Cuomo on Monday. While he acknowledged that the immigration issue helped Trump and wounded Democrats at the ballot in November, Carville argued the president is failing to keep his “No. 1 promise.”

“Chris, remember the No. 1 promise that Trump made, which he was going to do something about high grocery prices, specifically eggs,” Carville said Monday. “Before he took office, he said, ‘Well, I can’t do anything about it.’ Well, thank you for telling us.”

Carville said he’s “encouraged” that Democrats are already addressing this: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and 20 others slammed Trump in a letter Sunday for focusing on “mass deportations and pardoning Jan. 6 attackers” instead of food prices, NBC News reported.

Carville acknowledged that the ongoing bird flu contributes to the rising price of eggs. To drive home his point, he reiterated, “That’s not what he said in the election” last year before warning Democrats not to get distracted.

“So he says Greenland, Panama Canal, Canada, the Gulf of America or whatever insane stuff he says, and we shouldn’t get distracted by that,” Carville told Cuomo. “Your No. 1 thing was you were going to do something about high grocery prices.”

He continued, “You’ve got nothing done, and they’ve gone up since you’ve taken office.”

Sunday’s letter, co-written by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), arrived after the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported grocery costs rose 1.8% from December 2023 to December 2024 — with the price of eggs skyrocketing by 36.8% during that same time frame.

Trump made food prices a central campaign issue. At a September rally, he said, “We have to get them down.” A month later, he promised the same thing at another rally: “We will cut your taxes and inflation” and “slash your prices.”

However, he reneged after winning the election, saying, “It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up.”

The ongoing bird flu has affected more than 136 million birds since 2022 and led grocery stores to raise the price of eggs. As a result, Carville told Cuomo, “There are a lot of things we can do to give people tools in their toolbox to deal with increasing prices.”

He added, “I think if we execute on these kind of fundamental things, the voters will reward us.”
