PMQs stay – Keir Starmer faces main Donald Trump questions amid wild Gaza plan

Keir Starmer will likely come under pressure at PMQs to condemn Donald Trump’s wild idea to “take over” Gaza and permanently relocate its citizens.

In comments overnight the erratic US President suggested Palestinians should be moved from the “demolition site” to neighbouring countries. One UK minister has already rejected the idea of the US taking over Gaza and turning the territory into the “Riviera of the Middle East” – as Trump suggested.

But Mr Starmer will likely come under increasing pressure to distance the UK government from the comments that have sparked outrage in the Middle East.

The Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey “when we desperately need a fragile truce to hold, Trump’s ramblings on Gaza risk having the effect of a bull in a china shop”. He added: “The UK needs to make clear that these proposals must be rejected, and that we support international law and a two state solution based on 1967 borders.”

The PM may also face pressure from the Tory leader Kemi Badenoch over negotiations to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.

Robert Jenrick’s overpriced asylum prison clanger blasted in scathing report – ‘unacceptable’

Bungling Robert Jenrick’s decision to waste millions of pounds buying a contaminated prison highlighted a “dysfunctional culture” of throwing money away, a scathing report says.

UK minister hits back at Trump’s wild plan to take over Gaza

A senior UK minister has rejected Donald Trump’s idea of turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East” and relocating Palestinians from their homes.

Steve Reed, the UK’s Environment Secretary, said: “The UK government’s view is that Palestinian civilians after what they’ve been through these last 14 months must be able to return to their homes and rebuild their lives. And they will need a lot of international support to do that.”

He told the BBC : “We all want there to be a long-lasting peace. That can only be built on the stability of a two state solution, with a secure Israel at peace within their borders living alongside a free and independent Palestinian state. That is what the UK government wants to continue working towards.”

But Mr Reed also said it would be “inappropriate to provide a running commentary” of everything the US President or other world leaders say.
