Sheffield has united around the family of 15-year-old Harvey Willgoose, who was stabbed to death at school, as former football heroes paid tribute.
Harvey died following an incident at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield on Monday. Police and paramedics were called to the scene but the teenager died a short time later. South Yorkshire Police said a 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The teenager’s death has left the country and the city in shock with tributes being left at Harvey’s school by friends and those connected with the teenager. Messages of support have also appeared on social media, including from ex-Sheffield United player Josh Pemberton.
Former Blades defender Pemberton sent his condolences to the family on X, he wrote: “It’s absolutely tragic, such a young life taken away in a moment of madness, from an Ex Blades I send my deepest condolences to his family.”
Both sides of the city have come together to mourn Harvey’s tragic death, with former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer replying to Pemberton’s message with two broken heart emojis.
Pemberton began his career as a junior at Manchester United before he joined Rochdale and Crewe Alexandra. The defender joined Crystal Palace and played in the 1990 FA Cup final against United, which the Eagles lost in a replay.
The defender then joined the Bramall Lane outfit, where he played for three years. Pemberton retired in 1999 and later took up a coaching role in the Blades’ academy before going on to manage Kidderminster Harriers and Chesterfield.
Meanwhile, Palmer was a favourite at Hillsborough, the midfielder played over 200 times for Wednesday in two spells. The 18-time England international won all his Three Lions caps at Wednesday before he left to join Leeds United. Palmer returned on loan in 2001.
