Darts icon Wayne Mardle made his emotional return to TV on the opening night of the Premier League.

Mardle made his comeback calling Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen’s clash in Belfast as the repeat of the World Darts Championship final last month played out.

The 51-year-old has been off our screens since the tragic passing of his wife Donna shortly before the start of the world champs in December. Mardle’s absence was felt all around the sport with fans and fellow darts personalities missing his infectious character and darting insight.

“Good evening, evening all,” Mardle said as he returned to the mic – but he was quickly interrupted by a 180 by Luke Littler.

Fans were left buzzing with Mardle’s return as social media went ablaze with well wishes and welcome back messages for ‘Hawaii 501’.

“Wayne Mardle is back, great to see,” one fan posted. While a second said: “Wayne Mardle back on the darts comms. Absolutely love to see it!”

Donna’s passing was announced on the opening night of the World Darts Championship. Emma Paton had the tough task of informing the viewing audience as she explained Mardle’s absence.

“Wayne is the heart and soul of darts and everything we do. But the heart and soul of his world, his wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness. We will be remembering Donna throughout this tournament.

“Wayne, you’re in our thoughts. You’re in our hearts. We love you very much. And we will see you very soon.” In a post on X, Sky said: “Sky Sports would like to send their thoughts, prayers and condolences to our commentator Wayne Mardle, following the passing of his wife Donna earlier this week.”

PDC’s X account also paid tribute: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family, after the passing of his wife Donna earlier this week.”
