Weather map reveals the place temperatures will plummet as -7C Scandinavian chill grips Britain

Britain faces another cold and grey week with -7C lows and hill snow as a Scandinavian high pressure system brings chilly winds.

Temperatures of 5C (41F) to 6C (43F) across all parts of the UK today will feel closer to freezing in the ‘fairly brisk’ easterly winds, according to the Met Office.

The mercury dropped to -7.2C (19.0F) early this morning at Altnaharra in Scotland, while the overnight low in England was 0.5C (32.9F) at Dunkeswell in Devon.

It comes after thermometers fell to -8.6C (16.5F) in Altnaharra and Kinbrace yesterday, and to -7.4C (18.7F) in Aviemore on Saturday.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said areas with the clearest skies could again see temperatures fall to -5C or – 6C overnight into this morning.

He added: ‘But elsewhere any frosts could be quite patchy, because we’ve got the wind and the cloud around it’s stopping the temperatures getting too low.

‘Most places away from the North West of the UK just about escaping the frost by the looks of things.’

The pattern over the weekend of the best and brightest skies in Scotland, versus cold and cloudy in the rest of the UK, is set to continue through the working week.

The Scandinavian high has set itself up for this week, resulting in an easterly wind from the North Sea bringing widespread cloud.

Rain, drizzle and some sleet will fall today and tomorrow. Snow is forecast but mostly on hills, with a few centimetres of coverage possible in the Pennines.

Slightly drier weather is expected by the middle of the week.

The winds are ‘not quite as brisk’ from midweek onwards but it will still be a degree or two below average for this time of year.

By Thursday, pockets of frost and fog patches are possible where skies clear overnight, most likely in western areas.

And weather fronts will try to push in from the South West later in the week, bringing a risk of patchy rain, but that is likely to be contained to west Cornwall and Ireland.

‘So the bulk of the UK even to the end of the week stays in this cold air, often quite cloudy, but drier generally away from that far west and south-west corner at the end of the week,’ Mr Petagna said.
