‘Human centipede’ footage sees Brit vacationers dealing with fines if caught in bikinis
Holidaymakers in the Algarve will face fines of up to £1,250 if they are caught walking along the street in their bikinis or swim shorts this summer, a new law has warned
British holidaymakers heading to the Algarve this summer have been cautioned that they could be slapped with fines of up to £1,250 if found strolling in their swimwear after footage of tourists in a Human Centipede-style act when viral.
The local authorities in the party hotspot of Albufeira have introduced this hefty penalty as part of a clampdown on semi-nakedness outside of permitted zones such as beaches and hotel pools.
Tourists caught urinating in public could also face similar fines. Those who take it a step further by stripping completely or engaging in sexual activities in public could be hit even harder, with maximum fines set at £1,500 under the proposed new rules.
Street drinking is also off-limits under Albufeira’s clean-up campaign, with potential fines starting at £250. The resort’s draft Code of Behaviour, approved late last year, is currently open for public consultation before its anticipated enforcement ahead of the summer season.
Local officials state that the aim of the Code of Conduct is to “create better conditions for the development of the municipality, preserving Albufeira as a multicultural, family-friendly, and safe destination that values its heritage and identity”.
Albufeira’s mayor Jose Carlos Rolo announced the 30-day public consultation period in an official government document yesterday, emphasising the urgency to establish measures that effectively address abusive behaviours “largely by those who seek the municipality of Albufeira as a tourist destination”.
Last summer, a group of Brit holidaymakers caused quite the stir in a popular tourist town with their outrageous public nakedness, leaving locals gobsmacked and rethinking the type of punters the place draws in. A video of their boozy shenanigans, which showed them in the buff on their knees lined up on a bar counter in a Human Centipede-style act, spread like wildfire online.
Mr Rolo slammed the spectacle as “deeply negative” and vowed to get more coppers on the beat. The GNR police eventually ID’d eight of the cheeky Brits after some detective work, as they didn’t manage to nab them during their pants-down performance. The gobsmacking incident took place at Route Caffe 66, right on Albufeira’s answer to Magaluf’s notorious Punta Ballena party strip.
One lad was even caught on camera giving his mate’s exposed derriere a good whack while they were all on their knees forming a conga line on the bar top. As of this morning, it’s still a mystery what consequences they’re facing after the investigation that kicked off back then. This unsavoury episode unfolded as Albufeira was trying to shake off its wild party rep and climb the social ladder, aiming to be less reliant on British revellers.
Just two months before, the council had unveiled a plan to mix things up with the slogan ‘Albufeira is part of your life.’ Post-bar drama, Mr Rolo admitted that while sunbathing and beach time are still key to the resort’s appeal, they’re also keen on spicing up their offerings beyond the usual. Indeed, to help reduce seasonality but also to draw in new tourist markets from different nationalities.
