Premier League clarify Arne Slot pink card as Liverpool boss will get prolonged ban

The Premier League have confirmed the reason why Liverpool boss Arne Slot was sent off after full-time against Everton and will receive a two-match ban.

Slot was shown a red card by Michael Oliver following the conclusion of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. The Reds looked set to be heading for three points before James Tarkowski slammed home a last-gasp equaliser for the hosts.

Following the game, a brawl was sparked, seeing Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure seeing red, while Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also both given red cards after confronting Oliver.

The Premier League announced that Slot will now serve a two-game ban, the statement read: “Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were both sent off for two bookable offences in Everton’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool. The pair will each serve one-match bans.

“Doucoure will sit out Everton’s upcoming Premier League encounter with Crystal Palace, while Jones is suspended for the first of Liverpool’s Matchweek 25 games, versus Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language. He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result.”

As a result of their respective dismissals, neither Slot nor Hulshoff were permitted to give a post-match press conference, meaning captain Virgil van Dijk had to face the press and answer questions on the late controversy.

And with both Slot and his assistant to watch from the stands against Wolves and Aston Villa, it remains unclear who will take the lead role for the Reds on the touchline in those games.

In his interview, Van Dijk criticised Everton’s reaction to their equaliser and Doucoure’s subsequent celebration in front of the Liverpool fans. “This is their cup final. We saw it last year, and this year it’s a big blow. Doucoure wanted to provoke our fans. Curtis didn’t think that was the right thing to do. I think the referee didn’t have the game in control; I said that to him,” he said.
