Bad luck for the Reds as Joe Gomez might be set for another long spell out after tweaking his hamstring again.

He’d just returned to action in Sunday’s FA Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle when the Liverpool defender was forced to leave the pitch just 11 minutes into Liverpool’s shocking FA Cup defeat at Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.

Gomez, 27, who has only made 17 appearances this season under Arne Slot, had sustained a hamstring injury and the medical team is still running tests to figure out how severe the damage is.

Liverpool were already missing young midfielder Tyler Morton due to a shoulder injury.

However, they welcomed back Trent Alexander-Arnold against Everton, with the right-back playing the last 30 minutes after missing two matches. Prior to the Everton match, manager Arne Slot confirmed that Gomez’s latest injury occurred in the same leg that had previously caused him issues before his most recent return.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, the preferred centre-back pairing, started at Goodison Park, as they likely would have regardless of Gomez’s situation. After a chaotic game earlier this week, Everton gave Slot’s side a tough time, with a late strike from James Tarkowski securing a 2-2 draw.

It was the final time the Merseyside derby will be played at Goodison Park as the Toffees move to a new stadium at the start of the next season.

After the match, centre-back Tarkowski said: “That will be a special moment for the rest of my career and probably the biggest moment for me really because to score like that is special. I’ve had a couple of promotions and playing for my country, but this is the biggest. With everything that’s happening right now, leaving this iconic stadium, a special stadium, it will be the biggest one of my career.

“It was mental. There were people grabbing me. I had an 80 year old grabbing me and then a five year old kid pulling me to the floor, there were stewards everywhere, it was chaos, but it shows what a moment it is. With the occasion, it just feels special. I’m just pleased to be part of it.”
