BAFTA Film Awards 2025: Live updates from Royal Festival Hall as the primary winners are introduced

The biggest award of the night goes to frontrunner Conclave, beating off Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown and Emilia Perez.

The award is presented by Mark Hamill to director Edward Berger, who thanks the star-studded cast.

He gushes: ‘What you did to me on set when I watched you was pure magic, it was beyond my grasp or understanding.

‘I am so grateful I was able to witness it. We are deeply humbled. This is such a big, big honour.’

Mikey Madison scores her first BAFTA, winning Best Actress for the lead role in Anora.

She beat off stiff competition from Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofia Gascon, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Saoirse Ronan and Demi Moore.

The 25-year-old takes to the stage and says she should have listened to her publicist and ‘written a speech or something’.

She also says she wants to ‘take a moment to recognise the sex worker community. I see you. You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and an ally.’

Winning one of the night’s biggest awards is Adrien Brody, landing the Best Actor gong for The Brutalist.

He begins his acceptance speech: ‘I am so grateful. I want to thank the British public for embracing me and my creative endeavours.’

The actor added it is ‘incredibly meaningful as England has felt quite a bit like home lately. I will cherish this, thank you all.’

Adrien won the big prize over the likes of Timothee Chalamet, Sebastian Stan, Hugh Grant, Colman Domingo and Ralph Fiennes.

The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet wins the prestigious award for Best Director.

He beat out Anora’s Sean Baker, Conclave’s Edward Berger, Dune: Part Two’s Denis Villeneuve, Emilia Perez’s Jacques Audiard and The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat.

He said: ‘I am humbled and very grateful’ and insists there’s ‘no such thing’ as best director, adding: ‘It’s like a joke.’

The Rising Star Award is won by Alien Romulus star David Jonsson, the only prize which is chosen by the public.

Prince William introduced the award via pre-recorded video, saying: ‘I am certain we will be seeing much more of their work.’

Previous winners of the award James McAvoy and Letitia Wright present the award to David, who wins over Best Actress nominee Mikey Madison, Marisa Abela, Marisa Abela and Nabhaan Rizwan.

David Tennant’s wild opening saw him singing along to The Proclaimer’s I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) while wearing a kilt.

With contributions from James McAvoy, Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez, it seems to have gone down a storm with viewers.

The most nominated film of the night, Conclave, has scored the award unique to the BAFTAs – Outstanding British film.

It beat out nine other incredible films: Bird, Blitz, Gladiator II, Hard Truths, Kneecap, Lee, Love Lies Bleeding, The Outrun and Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Director accepted the award, gushing: ‘It is a huge honour, outstanding British film, and I’m not even from here! I feel so welcome in your midst.’

He added: ‘We live in a time of crisis for democracy. Institutions that used to bring us together are used to pull us apart.

‘Sometimes it is hard to keep the faith in that situation, but that’s why we make movies and that’s why we made this movie.’

The first part of the musical adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo was honoured for its incredible looks.

It won the gong over the likes of Blitz, A Complete Unknown, Conclave and Nosferatu.

Best makeup and hair has gone to The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley.

The body horror boasts a great deal of prosthetics and heavy duty makeup, that Margaret compared to ‘a torture chamber’.

Simon Pegg takes to the stage to hand out the award for outstanding contribution to British cinema.

With his usual comedic wit, he jokes that he comes to the BAFTAs frequently, despite never having won his own, joking he has the ‘utmost and sincere resentment’ for the nominees.

He says: ‘Show up I do… because I am proud to be a member of BAFTA and I don’t get out much’.

The award goes to MediCinema, a British charity that aims to improve the well-being of patients in NHS hospitals through the power of cinema and film.

The cinematography prize goes to The Brutalist, over Conclave, Emilia Perez, Dune: Part Two, Nosferatu.

Cinematographer Lol Crawley picks up the prize, saying: ‘I am so proud. Thank you to BAFTA and everyone who voted’.

The next awards go to two Best Picture frontrunners, Conclave and Anora.

Conclave scoppes the win for best editing over Anora and Dune: Part Two, Emilia Perez and Kneecap.

While Anora beats Conclave for best casting, as well as the The Apprentice, A Complete Unknown and Kneecap.

Zoe Saldana tearfully accepted the Best Supporting Actress award with a expletive-laden speech for Emilia Perez.

The award-winning actress, 46, was quickly pulled off camera for swearing as she shouted ‘f***, f***, f***’ when the countdown hurried her.

Zoe was in floods of tears as she accepted the award, admitting it is ‘so validating and a true honour’ to be honoured an award after being previously told by dialect coaches that her British accent wasn’t going to work.

The best supporting actor award goes to Kieran Culkin for his performance in A Real Pain.

The actor himself is not present at the ceremony, with his director and co-star Jesse Eisenberg accepting the award on his behalf.

Jesse is quick to point out it is the fifth award he has received on Kieran’s behalf, quipping: ‘It’s confirmed what I always thought… we have a similar life but his is 27% better than mine’.

Kieran scored the win over his Succession brother Jeremy Strong, Edward Norton, Yura Borisov, Guy Pearce and Clarence Maclin.

Jesse Eisenberg has scored a win for best original screenplay for his film A Real Pain.

Accepting the award, he admits he hasn’t prepared a speech as he didn’t think he had a chance of winning.

He says: ‘I didn’t write anything because I didn’t think I’d win. I want to share this with my wife, who didn’t come because she didn’t think I’d win.’

Beating out Flow, Inside Out 2, and The Wild Robot is Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

It marks the film’s second award so far, with creator Nick Park quipping: ‘I didn’t actually write a second speech.’

Conclave has won its first prize for best-adapted screenplay, over A Complete Unknown, Sing Sing, Emilia Perez and Nickel Boys.

The film stars big names like Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini and had a whopping 12 nods tonight.

The gong is picked up by screenwriter Peter Straughan.

Back-to-back award wins see Dune: Part Two pick up the gong for Best Sound and The Brutalist win Best Original Score.

Missing out on a win for Best Sound are Blitz, Gladiator II, The Substance and Wicked.

While The Brutalist edged out Conclave, Emilia Perez, Nosferatu and The Wild Robot for best score.

Emilia Perez beats out All We Imagine As Light, I’m Still Here, Kneecap, The Seed Of The Sacred Fig.

The Spanish drama is the second-most nominated film tonight, behind leader Conclave on 12 nods.

However, its awards hopes were dashed after the lead actress Karla Sofia Gascon came under fire when previous controversial tweets she’d made were uncovered.

The hit musical film adaptation wins the gong for best production design over The Brutalist, Nosferatu, Conclave and Dune: Part Two.

Accepting the award are designer Nathan Crowley and set decorator Lee Sandales.

Writer and director Rich Peppiatt wins the prize for his comedy-drama film Kneecap, about the Irish hip-hop trio of the same name.

Getting up on the stage, he tells the audience he is ‘absolutely honoured to be standing here’.

He declares Kneecap is ‘a movement’ and talks the importance of everyone having their culture, language and homeland respected, saying the award is dedicated to all those who are ‘out there fighting that fight’.

Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl has scored the award for Best Children’s and Family film – which was introduced to the BAFTAs this year.

The beloved animated movie beat off The Wild Robot, Kensuke’s Kingdom and Flow to scoop the prize.

Creator Nick Park praises the ‘amazing’ crew behind the film, who all ‘inject such character, charm and comedy’.

He says: ‘It is such a wonderful privilege to be working at Aardman every day with such obscenely talented artists and craftspeople.’

He is joined by Richard Beek and Merlin Crossingham to collect the gong, along with Wallace and Gromit themselves!

And pop star Camila Cabello can’t resist posing alongside the group and their trophies.

The first gong handed out is for best special visual effects, with it being picked up by Dune: Part Two.

The sci-fi epic sequel beat off competition in the category from Wicked, Better Man, Gladiator II and Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.

The actor is back for another turn at presenting the glitzy awards and pokes fun at the long runtime of some of the nominated films.

Noting the need for an intermission in cinema showings of The Brutalist, David issues a warning to winners.

To laughter from the audience, he quips: ‘If you do win, please keep your speeches the opposite to your films, nice and short.’

The Harry Potter star said: ‘I found out last November, I was actually on the toilet reading my emails and received one from Bafta, with a letter attached, saying: ‘You’ve been awarded a fellowship.’

‘I was excited but thought ‘hang on, it could be a scam’, so I checked the email address it come from, and it was indeed a Bafta email address.

‘Then I got very excited and jumped off the loo and ran around the house telling the kids and the dog.’

Warwick, who was born with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, a rare bone disorder that results in dwarfism, said he hopes his award is also for his work as an actor as well as his activism.

‘If I can have a sneaky bit of this Bafta for my performance work as well my advocacy, I’d be delighted.’

Newlyweds Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden put on an adorable red carpet display ahead of her nomination for Best Actress.

Speaking to Radio Times, David said: ‘The BAFTAs are supposed to be kind, last year we weren’t trying to roast people, but there was a joke about Cate Blanchett, and she looked a little bit annoyed, a little bit p***ed off.

‘And I remember going, “Oh God, no. I think you’re brilliant. I was just trying to be witty and make a point about how you’ve got lots of prizes, and we love you.”

‘So, I think if I’ve learned anything, it’s probably that I’m not interested in picking fights or making anyone feel in any way uncomfortable. If I have a style, it’s only that.’
