Manchester United fans have fumed at the club’s decision to sell David De gea and replace him with Andre Onana, after the Cameroonian shot-stopper’s latest howler

Manchester United fans have admitted the ‘worst mistake’ the club has made was getting rid of David De Gea.

De Gea, 34, is now on the books at Fiorentina, and his replacement, Andre Onana, is once again in the firing line of United fans. The Cameroonian shot-stopper turned a routine save in the opening goal for Spurs when he pushed the ball into the path of James Maddison.

Maddison didn’t need a second invitation to turn the ball home and its left United fans fuming on social media.

“Onana has to do better there. Turned what could’ve been a routine save into a huge chance,” one fan posted. While a second said: “Getting rid of De Gea for Onana was the biggest mistake we ever did as a club. We can’t keep on pretending…”

“Onana should be FIRST out of the door come the summer,” a third admitted. And another added: “Onana has been responsible for more goals conceded than De Gea ever was!”

Frans Hoek, who worked at the Red Devils as a goalkeeping coach under Louis van Gaal compared the two in the build-up to Sunday evening’s clash.

Speaking to RG, he said: “I was there at the 2023 UEFA Champions League Final and I thought Onana had a perfect game, he was amazing for Inter.

“He is capable of playing at an incredibly high level and can reach an incredible level, but you have to do it three times a week, 50–60 times a year, which is very difficult.

“Consistency is the most important thing for a goal player, De Gea was incredibly consistent in my two years at United, and if I look at Onana, I can see he’s not consistent.”
