Manchester City were taught a lesson as they were unceremoniously dumped out of the UEFA Champions League by a rampant Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Kylian Mbappe was the star of the show as his hat-trick ensured City’s time in this tournament would end in the Spanish capital.
He scored his and Real Madrid’s first with a lob after four minutes and City never recovered from then on, offering next to no threat in attack.
Carlo Ancelotti‘s ability to juggle so many egos in the Real Madrid dressing room underlines his quality as one of the best managers ever and he again has them in contention to lift this trophy.
For City this is another crushing blow in a difficult season that has brought a lot more lows than it has highs.
Mail Sport’s NATHAN SALT runs the rule over the two sides…

Kylian Mbappe produced a stunning hat-trick as Real Madrid knocked Man City out of Europe

Real Madrid ran riot at the Bernabeu to press home their narrow advantage from the first leg
REAL MADRID (4-2-3-1)
Thibaut Courtois – 6
Was a spectator for the first half as a flat Manchester City side failed to force a save out of him. Things hardly got much harder in the second half as Pep Guardiola’s side appeared to all but throw in the towel. Did end up conceding a tap-in as a late consolation.
Federico Valverde – 8
Mr Reliable for Real Madrid and the Los Blancos captain again came up trumps here operating at right back. One of the most underrated players in world football, such is his quality in the biggest games. Produced a number of crosses from the right that deserved better finishing.
Antonio Rudiger – 7
Would have relished the physical battle up against Erling Haaland but it was not to be. May have felt susceptible to pace with Omar Marmoush supposedly leading the line but this was a straightforward night for him and the Real Madrid backline.
Raul Asencio – 7.5
Had the freedom of the Bernabeu to clip a long through ball over the top to pick out Mbappe for the opening goal. Produced a thunderous challenge on Omar Marmoush inside the penalty area that drew huge celebrations. A proper defender.

Real Madrid centre back Raul Asencio was colossal at the back and looks like a top defender

Antonio Rudiger had very little to do alongside Asencio on what was a straightforward evening

Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde is a diamond in this team and remains underrated
Ferland Mendy – 6.5
City tried to gain some joy down his side, knowing full well they would get no change out of Valverde on the other. Won more battles than he lost and he knows full well he does not need to shine when he’s surrounded by so many Ballon d’Or-level superstars.
Aurelien Tchouameni – 8
Operated as a centre back in the first leg but restored to central midfield here. So composed and it’s absolutely no surprise clubs in England, such as Liverpool, see him as a dream midfield signing. Unlucky not to have assisted Mbappe with a delightful chip over the City defence in the first half.
Dani Ceballos – 6.5
The former Arsenal loanee looks reborn right now and is in this side on merit. Brings great energy to this Real Madrid side and it is why he is edging out the likes of Luka Modric and Eduardo Camavinga in Carlo Ancelotti’s thinking.
Rodrygo – 8.5
Just a joy to watch. He is so direct and is fluid which confuses opponents – Man City included. Drifted in from the right to play No 10 for spells and City had no answer to him. Any winger in world football should be studying the Brazilian for how to do it at an elite level.

Rodrygo put on an attacking clinic that every young winger coming up should study

Real Madrid never looked ruffled and will be hard to knock off in their favourite competition
Jude Bellingham – 6.5
Booked for a frustrated challenge on Phil Foden. He took a backseat role in this game as the superstars around him took turns standing in the spotlight. He’s in a difficult moment right now amid the furore around his recent red card in LaLiga, but he hardly had to get out of second gear on a comfortable night against a poor City side.
Vinicius Jnr – 8
Provides one of the toughest assignments in world football, so tricky is he with his speed and his skills. Gave Khusanov nightmares time and time again and it became even more cruel when he teamed up with Mbappe to pile further misery on the young defender. His performance deserved a goal.
Kylian Mbappe – 9
A truly sensational display to mark his 21st hat-trick for club and country and his third in the Champions League. He lofted Ederson to make it 26 goals in 38 games this season, then did brilliantly to sit Josko Gvardiol down for his 27th. Attacked Phil Foden down the right, stepover then curled into the corner for his 28th. Operating on a totally different level to any of City’s players.
MANAGER: Carlo Ancelotti – 8
Once again underlined why he’s the master man manager. How he is able to get so many egos in one dressing room to pull in the right direction needs to be studied. The best of the best when it comes to this kind of job – and it’s exactly why Real Madrid are once again favourite to win the Champions League.

MANCHESTER CITY (4-2-3-1)
Ederson – 5
Could hardly be blamed for Mbappe’s pair of first half goals having been left exposed by his defenders. Too easily beaten for Mbappe’s hat-trick goal but he was down the list of issues on a galling night.
Abdukodir Khusanov – 5
Starting in the Champions League for the first time, Khusanov was targeted by Real Madrid as Vinicius Jnr and Jude Bellingham took turns isolating him down City’s right side. A long, long night.
John Stones – 4
His night was over after five minutes after an innocuous challenge from Vinicius Jnr. Miscommunication with Ruben Dias saw neither of them get close to Kylian Mbappe – of all people – to open the scoring. Boost that he walked off, rather than get taken off on a stretcher.
Ruben Dias – 6
The Man City captain got his positioning horribly wrong to allow Mbappe to run through on goal before lobbing Ederson. He did recover and was the best City defender on the night, making a number of crucial defensive blocks to keep the score down.

Ruben Dias (middle) started the night horrendously but soon made some key interceptions

Real Madrid targeted Abdukodir Khusanov as the weakest link in the Manchester City defence
Josko Gvardiol – 5.5
Was embarrassed by Kylian Mbappe as he was left laying on the floor as the Frenchman slotted in his second goal of the night. Is a top player but was made to look increasingly ordinary here.
Nico Gonzalez – 5
Spent too much time arguing with the referee over silly fouls and should have spent more time trying to wrestle some control back in a difficult midfield battle. Did score a late consolation to give the travelling fans something to cheer.
Ilkay Gundogan – 6.5
Carries a lot of responsibility on his shoulders alongside younger opponents. Couldn’t influence the game as many know he can on the stage as big as this. Booked for a late challenge on Rodrygo.
Phil Foden – 4
For a player of his talent this was way below the levels required if City are to land a bloody nose on teams as stacked as Real Madrid. Stung the gloves of Thibaut Courtois late on but this game washed over him.

Phil Foden (left) and Omar Marmoush (right) were both anonymous in an anaemic City attack

Bernardo Silva is too easy to mark out of the game and his influence on matches is waning
Bernardo Silva – 4
Was anonymous here aside from a couple of flashpoints, including blazing over the bar when Dani Ceballos was down in pain on the floor. His influence on games seems to be fading by the week.
Savinho – 5
For a direct runner as tricky as him he took up some incredibly odd positions that saw him easily crowded out. Looked the liveliest of the City attack but the bar was incredibly low.
Omar Marmoush – 4
Hero to zero. His hat-trick against Newcastle United at the weekend was sublime but it was easy to forget he was even playing at the Bernabeu. A complete non-entity for Pep Guardiola’s side leading the line.
MANAGER: Pep Guardiola – 4.5
Is enduring a season which is further underlining that this group as currently constructed looks to have gone as far as it can. A rebuild, even bigger than the one undertaken in January, looks crucial for the summer.
