Wetherspoons punters were left furious with a “serious issue” affecting the pub – a popular breakfast item being slashed.

The popular pub chain has completely changed its traditional English breakfast due to a shortage of free-range eggs. The pub chain has been hit by supply issues, leaving customers without eggs and instead offering a replacement item. As of Tuesday (February 18), some punters were unable to get an egg on their breakfast, and were instead given a hash brown as a replacement.

Notices have appeared outside several Wetherspoons locations, informing customers of the shortage and outlining the changes to popular breakfast dishes. The signs read: “Free-range egg supply shortages.”

In a statement, Wetherspoons explained that it sources some of its free-range eggs from suppliers and farms in Northern Ireland. “The recent outbreak of Avian flu has put pressure on egg availability with measures put in place by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to restrict the spread,” it said.

“We are working with all of our egg suppliers to reduce disruption in pubs.”
