Boy, 14, suffered horrific seven-day gradual loss of life after injecting himself with butterfly as a part of ‘social media problem’
Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, who died after injecting himself with a dead butterfly as part of a “social media challenge”, suffered a seven-day death in hospital
A 14 year old boy tragically died after injecting himself with a crushed butterfly as part of a deadly “online challenge“.
Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, suffered a painful seven-day ordeal in hospital before his untimely death. The Brazillian teen admitted to doctors that he had injected a liquid containing a pulverised butterfly into his leg.
His dad rushed him to the hospital after he began to vomit and limp, his condition rapidly worsen. The lad remained under specialist care at Vitória da Conquista general hospital for a week.
The Civil Police of Bahia are now awaiting full autopsy results after launching an investigation into the possibility that the bizarre act was part of a social media trend.
There is speculation in some Brazilian media outlets that Davi may have been replicating an experiment he found online, although it’s reported that he denied this before his death.
After confessing to injecting the concoction, he allegedly told medical staff that he had purchased supplies from a chemist, mixed a dead butterfly with water, and injected the solution into his right leg.
Luiz Fernando D. Relvas, a specialist at Hospital Santa Marcelina, suggested to Brazilian news site VivaBem that the youngster could have suffered “an embolism, an infection, or an allergic reaction”.
He added: “We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body. There may have been air left inside, which could lead to an embolism,” He further explained that such a condition can result in “sudden deterioration and death”, reports the Mirror.
Investigators are also reportedly considering the possibility that the lad may have gone into septic shock after toxins from the mix caused his body to shut down.
His father reportedly discovered the used syringe under his son’s pillow while cleaning the house, as per local reports. The Civil Police in Vitoria da Conquista, who are heading the investigation, are set to perform an autopsy to determine Davi’s cause of death.
