Volkswagen introducing new turbocharged petrol engines for Tiguan and Tayron

Powerful new turbocharged petrol engines with greater pulling power are joining the Volkswagen Tiguan and Tayron line-ups – with all-wheel drive to help motorists who need more muscle to tow trailers and caravans.

The Tiguan and Tayron SUVs are available with 204hp or 265hp versions of the 2.0-litre TSI petrol 4Motion all-wheel drive combination. The blend of extra power and all-wheel drive offers owners towing capacities of up to 2,200kg on the Tiguan and 2,500kg on the Tayron, says VW.

The German car maker notes: ‘The new engines and all-wheel drive provide added safety and driving stability in all weather and road conditions. It also makes them superior towing vehicles.

‘Under normal driving conditions – in the city on dry roads without maximum load requirements, for example – only the front axle is powered. This saves fuel.’

Wheels on the rear axle kick in during higher load requirements or when there is a risk of a wheel losing grip. All-wheel drive can also be engaged manually to boost traction on slippery roads.
