Mohamed Salah is now keeping company with the most iconic players in Liverpool’s long and glorious history.

That’s the view of Didi Hamann, someone who helped shape part of that history when he helped Liverpool win the Champions League on that astonishing night in Istanbul in 2005.

But fast forward two decades and Hamann believes the performances and numbers Salah is producing put him alongside the club’s all-time greats.

Salah plundered his 30th goal of another stellar season in Liverpool’s convincing win at Manchester City. He also created the second goal for Dominik Szoboszlai.

The ‘Egyptian King’ has now scored 30 goals or more in five separate seasons for Liverpool, putting him level with Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. He has also drawn level with Gordon Hodgson in third place on Liverpool’s list of all-time leading scorers, with 241 goals.

While Salah also has 21 assists this season, which means he has 51 contributions to goals before the end of February. Salah, 32, continues to drive Arne Slot’s men towards a dream double of Premier League and Champions League glory.

Hamann, who won 10 major trophies with Liverpool, insists Salah now deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as the likes of Sir Kenny Dalglish, Steven Gerrard and Rush.

Hamann told Prime Casino: “The comparison with Gerrard is probably not wrong. He’s getting compared to Dalglish, to Rush, [Michael] Owen, [Robbie] Fowler, [Fernando] Torres and [Luis] Suarez.

“If you look at the goals, the players or the people he’s getting compared with are all centre-forwards. He’s playing on the wing. To amass the amount of goals from the right, is just ridiculous.

“Where would he rank in all-time history? I think probably in the top five. If you ask me, when I left and obviously, I was lucky to meet some of the old guys and obviously play with some fantastic players, I would have always said to get in the top five all-time Liverpool greats, you’ve got to achieve something which is probably not possible. Well, he did.”

The former Germany midfielder says what also makes Salah stand out is his unselfish attitude and professionalism, which continue to make him a role model to others.

Hamann said: “What you shouldn’t forget also is that there’s never any trouble from him. Because sometimes with these flair players, players who make the difference, they are sometimes a bit different because they know how good they are – and sometimes they can upset teammates for the way they behave.

“But there hasn’t been anything with him. Everything he did was always in the best interest of the team. To have a player like this, who is so dedicated and still be at this level is also great.

“It’s also a great role model for younger players, because if you’re in the dressing room and you see the way (Virgil) Van Dijk prepares for training, Salah prepares, the way they train, you don’t even think about being big-headed. You just get on with it – and this is down to these two guys.”

Hamann insist Salah has been the Premier League’s stand out player this season. He added: “I probably have to go with Salah when picking the best player in the Premier League this season.

“The way Liverpool have been going, it would be wrong to pick anyone outside of Liverpool’s team, and it’s been Salah who’s scoring goals. To do it at his age – he’s been fantastic.”
