James Hewitt weighs in on Prince Harry household rift as he says Diana can be ‘involved’

Princess Diana “would have done her best” to try to heal the ongoing rift between her feuding sons Princes William and Harry, her former lover James Hewitt claimed on Tuesday.
The former cavalry officer, 66, said the late Princess of Wales would have been “concerned” about the pair in a rare TV interview. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he said: “I think that any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift… and she’d do her best to try and get them together.”
Mr Hewitt had a five-year affair with Lady Di between 1986 and 1991, which the Princess publicly confessed to during a bombshell BBC Panorama interview in 1995.
He appeared on the ITV show to talk about his involvement in Operation Safedrop, which is delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
But he was also asked about Diana by host Richard Madeley and revealed the last time he spoke to Diana was “just after” the controversial sit-down interview with Martin Bashir, in which she revealed all on her marriage to Prince Charles, who she divorced a year later.
And he blasted the BBC and Bashir, who had commissioned a graphic designer to make two fake bank statements, to get Diana on side for the chat.
Mr Hewitt added: “It was a stitch up job. It was appalling of Bashir to inveigled, lied to her, criminal activity, absolutely appalling. As I’ve said, I hate bullies and bullying and arrogant people and I think it’s appalling.”
He said Diana seemed “distant” when they last spoke, adding: “It did create problems, but I’m trying to move on from that. This is admittedly, you know, personal for me to try and move on and help as best I can.”
Prince William and Harry’s fallout has been widely publicised following Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from the monarchy in January 2020.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since made numerous claims against the royal institution during their Oprah Winfrey interview and in Harry’s best-selling memoir Spare.
The California-based couple also addressed why they stepped down from royal duties in their six-part documentary series Harry & Meghan, which landed on Netflix in 2022.
Princess Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997.
