Brits have shared their favourite pancake toppings, and it seems anything goes – from baked beans to tartare sauce dribbled on top.

Classic choices are getting ditched as Brits choose to drizzle sweet chilli instead of syrup onto their pancakes, and others pull together combos like strawberries with cream cheese or brie with a dollop of cranberry.

A recent survey of 2,000 adults showed that more than half of Brits reckon pancakes are the perfect base for a bit of kitchen creativity.

In fact, eight in 10 are ready to whip up some outlandish topping combos this Shrove Tuesday, which is rolling around on March 4th.

Of the more adventurous, 6% confessed they’ve chucked salty sardines on top, and a spicy 27% have gone for something with a kick.

But many Brits still prefer trusty trios like lemon and sugar (62%), golden syrup (40%), and slathering on chocolate spread (33%).

However, there’s a split when it comes to the actual pancake preference as 35% are all about thick, fluffy ones, and 31% are sweet on the slim, crêpe-style.

The research, conducted by Lyle’s Golden Syrup, lands just as they’re creating magic with Georgie Grasso, winner of the Great British Bake Off 2024. They’re whipping up some delicious “swavoury” treats, including a chorizo, bacon, and golden syrup pancake.

Rhian Moore from Lyle’s said: “Some of the greatest combinations of all time would have seemed unusual at first.

“Imagine being the first person to mix salt and vinegar, or peanut butter and jam – history favours the bold when it comes to flavours.

“We’re proud champions of creativity and experimentation, and we want to celebrate the weird, wonderful, and downright strange ‘swavoury’ toppings.”

For many, whipping up pancakes is a beloved tradition. Almost half of those polled (47%) said they always try to observe Shrove Tuesday, and 59% fondly remembered childhood memories of making pancakes with their families.
