Man Utd win ‘woeful advert for the Premier League’ as Ruben Amorim declare could also be proper

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United took all three points on Wednesday evening – but the Portuguese manager’s claim about them being the worst Red Devils team ever might be correct on this evidence

Manchester United secured a rare league win, after having the good fortune to run into a team worse than them at Old Trafford.

Despite taking the lead and having an extra man for half a game, Ipswich still managed to lose to one of the worst United teams on record.

This was a calamitous game from start to finish. A woeful advert for the Premier League. United starred in their own footballing version of the ‘The Good, Bad & Ugly’, while Ipswich stuck to being just bad.

United gifted Ipswich’s Jaden Philogene two first half goals with comical defending, while Patrick Dorgu was dismissed.

But an own goal from Sam Morsy and Matthijs de Ligt’s scrambled effort kept United in the game, before Harry Maguire settled it in the home team’s favour after the break.

Ruben Amorim had taken just 15 league points from a possible 45 since taking charge in November, including one point from the last six. His introduction to life as United boss had been nothing short of shambolic.

But despite it feeling like the walls were closing in on him, defeat to Ipswich still felt unthinkable. The visitors arrived in Manchester having won just three league games all season, and had not tasted victory at all in 2025.

But United have mastered the art of making utter fools of themselves. And it took them less than four minutes to hand Ipswich a goal start, thanks to some defending that would have been embarrassing from a pub team

A long ball forward presented no danger, until Andre Onana rushed out of his goal only to see Dorgu poke it behind him, leaving Philogene to walk the ball into an open goal.

Amorim reached down for a swig of water, but must have needed something much stronger. But somehow United flipped the game on its head with two goals in four minutes.

United were level on 22 minutes when Morsey headed a Bruno Fernandes free kick into his own net. It had nothing to do with the attacking prowess of United, but Amorim wasn’t complaining.

And De Ligt bundled home a loose ball from close range following a goalmouth scramble, to make it 2-1 to the home side.

But just when United seemed to be in control of the game, Dorgu saw red for a horrific challenge on Omari Hutchinson that could have broken his leg.

Then United’s fragile lead was wiped out within minutes, when De Ligt and Onana combined to allow Philogene’s cross from wide on the right to travel all the way into the bottom corner.

Two minutes into the second half Maguire headed United back in front from Fernandes’s corner. Before helping United cling on for dear life.
