Luke Littler, 18, set to conflict with Phil Taylor, 64, in a ‘first time ever’ match
Darts fans have been sent into a frenzy after a cryptic post appeared to suggest that Luke Littler and Phil Taylor would face off in a historic match of darts
Darts fans have been stunned as a cryptic post appeared to suggest that Luke Littler and Phil Taylor are set to face off.
Littler and Taylor have been at the centre of a generation debate among darts fans between who would win in their prime, well at least in the 18-year-old’s case, his current guise.
But that talk could, sort of, be put to the test with Littler and Taylor’s sponsor, Target Darts, posting a video on X appearing to announce that ‘The Nuke’ and ‘The Power’ will take each other on.
The video was posted with the caption: “For the first time ever. The Power vs The Nuke. Coming soon…” The short clip built up the drama as both players stared off at the end, with text on the video teasing “two champions” going “head to head for the first time ever”.
There was no confirmation whether their meet would actually be a darts match and not a promotional campaign that they will star in together.
However, fans have remained optimistic that the two will share the oche together with the chance to see the greatest of all time take on the teenage world champion sensation.
One user replied to the video, saying: “This is going to be insane.” A second added: “The Master vs the Apprentice.” With a third exclaiming: “No waaaay! Two champions, this is the Ultimate! So excited for this!”
Fans also questioned whether Michael van Gerwen will have a seat at the table, as a frame in the video seemingly teased the Dutchman with a green shirt and a watch resembling his. “Looks like Van Gerwen at 11sec. Bec of the green shirt,” one pondered. To which another user replied: “I’m sure that is his watch too.”
But others were sceptical that the event would see the two superstars take to the oche, one said: “Hard to get excited for this when a couple weeks ago Phil Taylor said in an interview he doesn’t even have a set of darts to throw anymore cause he gave them away.”
A second also alluded to Taylor’s previous comments that he had got rid of every dart and dartboard in his home, adding: “I thought Phil said he no longer had darts or a board.”
The 16-time world champion recently revealed to talkSPORT: “I don’t even have a set of darts anymore or a dartboard. My grandkids have had my dartboard, my mates have had my darts.”
Taylor had previously quipped that he would be up for taking on Littler in an exhibition if two very specific requirements are met, he said: “No [I don’t want to play him]. Not yet, I don’t want to play him to be quite honest with you! I’d play him in an exhibition, yeah. One leg of 301, I go first!”
