Chris Eubank Jr’s cousin has struck up unlikely relationship with Fabian Hurzeler
Boxing Clever: Exclusive interview with Harlem Eubank, the cousin of Chris Eubank Jr, ahead of his clash with Tyrone McKenna in Brighton next week
The Eubank name was in the news this week for some egg-traodinary reasons but it was burgers at Brighton that shocked Harlem recently.
The cousin of Chris Eubank Jr is cracking on with his career and faces Tyrone McKenna next Friday on the south coast in a welterweight clash.
Harlem Eubank is the welterweight that Conor Benn should probably be mixing it with rather than the middleweight Chris.
But he’s making a name for himself and the former Brighton academy player returned to the club recently for a chat with Lewis Dunk and Solly March, who he played with.
“It was cool to see them,” he said. “I caught them on their lunch break and they were munching away on quarter pounders. It is a nice diet to have in the football game. In the boxing game you can’t do that!
“Footballers must need the calories. It was great to see them. I was questioning them if they’re allowed that and making sure it wasn’t a sneaky one on the side. It is the sacrifice that comes with boxing.
“Unfortunately they’ve got a game the next day so they can’t make this fight but they will next time maybe.”
Eubank, 31, has struck up a relationship with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, too. Hurzeler is planning to attend the fight on Friday at the Brighton Centre.
“I’ve done some training with his family,” said Eubank. “Over Christmas I went down and did some boxing training with his family. I got them punching and letting their hands fly. He is due to come down to the fight and I’m planning to put on a show.”
Eubank has put a frustrating 2024 behind him when his proposed bout with rising star Adam Azim collapsed and he’s now focussing on welterweight and a busy 2025. Belfast man McKenna has mixed it with some decent operators so will be a stern test for him.
Eubank added: “This is the year where I can start to make my mark on the sport and I believe that is what I’m going to do.”
*Over in the US this weekend, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis puts his title and unbeaten record on the line against Lamont Roach.
The division is hotting up nicely over in the States and Davis should be looking at showdowns with the likes of Keyshawn Davis, Shakur Stevenson and Devin Haney this year.
