TikTok sensation Megan Rayner becomes viral sensation
Tesco’s unlikeliest new TikTok star has become a social media sensation after vowing to walk for three minutes for every follower – prompting a surge in 60,000 followers in less than a week.
Megan Rayner, 24, had just 21 followers when she introduced herself to TikTok as a ‘tubby little ginger c***’ and announced her daily step challenge, a reference to a line from Ricky Gervais’s black comedy Afterlife.
But social media users fell in love with her hilarious, self-deprecating videos and overnight she’d gained 500 new followers. Retail assistant Megan, from the Isle of Wight, then began begging people to stop following her as the amount of walking she’d have to do spiralled out of control.
A week on, she has more than 62,000 followers and would have to ‘walk the rest of her life‘ if she were to fulfil her initial promise.
Speaking exclusively to your Daily Star, she said: “I started on 21, I woke up the next day and I had 547. I got home that night and I was at like 10,000. I don’t know why, a lot of comments are saying it’s because of my intro.
“A lot of people saying it’s what got them following. But a lot of people are tagging me saying they’re inspired by me and they’re now going out for walks. I feel overwhelmed by it, it’s insane.”
Staff at the supermarket giant have gone viral on the platform for performing dances, giving behind the scenes looks at their shifts or sharing meal deal hacks. But Megan does none of these.
Instead, she started posting videos out of boredom and shares hilarious videos about her stressing over her follower count and clocking up the miles on her treadmill at home.
But her authentic clips have struck a cord with TikTok users as she’s attracted a huge following from around the world and they have even got her recognised at work.
She added: “I was really bored and I’d bought a treadmill last year and only used it a couple of times. I thought I’d get like an extra 20 followers or so, but it’s just gone insane.
“I had a customer come in the shop and recognise me, which through me off. I keept thinking about being in a room with this amount of people, but I just thinking I’m doing something good. I’m just winging it.”
After her follower count got out of hand, Megan instead opted to set a target of 50 miles in March after reaching 50,000 followers.
And she’s set up a fundraising page in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, a charity close to her heart because her mum suffers from the condition.
Megan added: “I think I’ll be walking for the rest of my life if I did three minutes for every follower, so I’m doing 50 miles for March. I’m doing around an hour to an hour and half every day.
“My mum has suffered from MS my whole life so I know first-hand how it affects people because I have seen her struggle. And I’ve seen how the MS Society helps people with MS.”
