UK metropolis pub fined over £20k for blasting out ‘loud pop music with a heavy bass’
An East London pub has been fined after noise complaints from a local, claiming there was ‘loud pop music with a heavy bass’ – council warnings were continuously ignored
A pub has been fined for blasting out loud music and causing a nuisance to locals.
Complaints were made about The Dockers’ Inn pub in East London which were ignored, leading to the owners being hit with a £20,000 fine.
A Tower Hamlets local made several complaints to the council about “loud pop music with a heavy bass” being played at the venue.
Tower Hamlets Council claimed that their Environmental Protection (Noise) Team confirmed the music was in fact too loud and deemed it to be a “nuisance”.
Its officers then paid a visit to the pub and said that multiple letters were sent to the premises about the noise. However, the loud music continued to play, much to the dismay of locals.
The Environmental Protection Team even said that they had sent a legal notice to the pub’s operators, relating to the loud music, and yet, nothing changed.
Following this, the Tower Hamlets Council decided to take things further by taking Dockers Inn Ltd to court, where, in their absence, they were convicted of noise nuisance.
Sentencing took place last month, and it was then that it was announced the company would be fined £17,000, as well as a victim surcharge of £2,000 and a further £1,299 in costs.
Cllr Abu Talha Chowdhury, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “We want Tower Hamlets to be a vibrant place to live, work, and visit, but establishments which cause a nuisance to local residents will not be tolerated.
“I encourage anyone who is struggling with inconsiderate noise to report this to the council so we can look into it. We will always act and will take companies to court when necessary. Thank you to the council teams who worked tirelessly to secure this outcome.”
The news comes as another large fine has been made in the area, but this time to the landlords of a Tower Hamlets flat, after the tragic death of a father.
A husband and wife who rented out a “grossly overcrowded” flat in the East London borough have faced the fine of £90,000 after a fire broke out in their property.
The damage was caused by an e-bike fire and resulted in the death of Mizanur Rahman, 41, who died from the effects of smoke inhalation. A faulty lithium-ion e-bike battery was charging at the time, the London Fire Brigade said.
It is believed that the property was occupied by 23 people, despite only being licensed for three people from two households. Former residents of the flat shared that they were paying roughly £90 a week, while some shared beds or even slept on the floor, My London reports.
