Ikea furniture from the seventies is being sold at auctions for huge amounts of money, and the 1970s design is described as a trend to watch and invest in by experts
Dusty old Ikea furniture from the seventies is being sold at auctions for thousands.
Experts say people are paying a fortune for decades old chairs and tables from the Scandinavian flat pack store.
Auctioneers Barnebys said it comes amongst a resurgence for seventies style decor. Barnebys’ Annual Market Report highlighted 1970 design as a trend to watch and invest in.
It said: “In the auction world, there’s a noticeable surge of interest in 1970s furniture and collectibles.
“Vintage IKEA furniture, once seen as mass-market and affordable, is now being recognised as valuable, with early and limited-edition pieces from the 1950s through the 1990s commanding impressive prices.”
In 2021 an IKEA armchair called “Cavelli” by Bengt Ruda was sold for £14,000 at an auction in Stockholm.
The report added: “The fact that IKEA has produced several classics over the years is news to the art collecting world.
“But several IKEA designs are sold today at auction for prices that far exceed their original modest purchase price according to Barnebys the leading art & antiques search engine that tracks art market trends.
“Looking ahead, a resurgence of retro-futurism, blending 1960s and 70s space-age aesthetics with modern sensibilities, is expected in 2025. “
Experts said earthy tones like mustard yellow, olive green and chocolate brown are gaining popularity, bringing warmth and nostalgia to contemporary spaces.
Other 1970s items, including vintage electronics, fashion, and art, are becoming increasingly popular among collectors.
