Thrifty shoppers who buy clothes and shoes from second hand sites including are being left with bed bugs, lice and fungal infections.

Experts have said the eco-friendly trend is causing a surge in creepy critters due to people not washing clothes properly before the send them out and wear them.

They said hidden germs in second hand clobber can also easily spread superbugs like the flu, fungal infections like athlete’s foot and even lice or bed bugs.

Preloved shopping has become an increasingly popular choice for budget-conscious and eco-conscious consumers alike.

But cleaning gurus said there’s one crucial aspect many shoppers overlook – hidden germs.

Lamprini Fameli, product expert at Philips, warned: “Second-hand clothing can harbour bacteria or germs from previous wearers, improper storage, or transportation.

“While dry cleaning is an option, it can be costly and may not be suitable for all delicate fabrics.“
