Internet stars were on show at the home of football on Saturday afternoon as Sidemen FC took on the YouTube All Stars. The game that featured KSI, Logan Paul and Speed was a dramatic 9-9 contest that went to penalties.
The event raised a staggering £4.7million at the time of writing as fans unable to secure a ticket were able to watch for free on YouTube. And the game certainly was not short of talking points.
During the first-half, Joe Weller scored a penalty for Sidemen FC to open the scoring and ran over to celebrate by the corner flag. Weller, who was famously beaten by KSI in a boxing match in 2018, was joined by team-mates for the celebration, including YouTuber-turned-boxer-turned-WWE star Logan Paul.
Weller produced a Cristiano Ronaldo-esque ‘Siu’ celebration before he and Paul performed their own moment. Paul mimicked a kick to the chest of Weller before he left the Brighton-based YouTuber on his back after pulling off a suplex move.
Paul then pinned Weller as fellow Sidemen team-mates gave a three count, with the WWE fan clearly enjoying lining up against the latest big name in the production.
From the first goal of the game to the final kick, the fans watching inside Wembley and at home were treated to an end-to-end contest. The 90 minutes finished 9-9, with Theo Baker scoring a hat-trick before the game went to penalties.
Speed had the chance to win the All Stars the match from the spot after Miniminter had seen his penalty saved by Stretch.
The American stepped up and saw his effort squeeze over the line after XQC was unable to keep out the penalty, which was spooned down the middle of the goal. The spot-kick was understatedly described as “not one for a beauty contest” by Hashtag United founder Spencer FC on commentary.
It was the sixth iteration of Sidemen football games after the first edition was played at St Mary’s Stadium in 2016. There has since been three games at The Valley and one at the London Stadium.
