A group of Lucy Letby supporters have been visiting the convicted baby killer’s ‘old haunts’, including her home.

The 35-year-old former nurse, who was handed 15 life sentences for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of eight more, is currently serving time at HMP Bronzefield. However, doubt has recently been cast over her guilt, and legions of fans have now dedicated themselves to the campaign to free her.

Some have even been touring the places she used to frequent, from the 1960s semi-detached house in Chester she lived in while the murders were carried out to the Countess of Chester Hospital where she worked. Fans have taken to a Facebook group in support of her and to share their unlikely pilgrimages, with one writing: “I’ve been in Chester visiting Lucy’s old haunts. I’ll be there again – definitely want to visit the house.”

Some even visited a pub where she celebrated her birthday, toasting her with prosecco and brandishing banners in support of her back in January. This was met with backlash after photos of the event were shared online, with a friend of a parent whose daughter was murdered by Letby writing: “What’s next, do we have celebrations for Myra Hindley and Ian Brady?”

It’s not just online supporters vouching for Letby and questioning her conviction. Some medical experts have said the deaths of the children, which occurred between June 2015 and June 2016, could have been the result of substandard care or accidents.

Last month, neonatologist Dr Shoo Lee and other medics said the deaths could be blamed on poor care, infected sinks and accidents by overworked and under-resourced medics. Ken Macdonald KC, who initially supported the conviction, said Dr Lee’s evidence “comprehensively trashed the prosecution case.”

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which investigates potential miscarriages of justice, is now assessing Letby’s case – said to involve a “significant volume of complicated evidence.”

The Countess of Chester’s former head of nursing, Karen Rees, has also argued that Letby is innocent. She had only joined a few months earlier when she told Letby that she was being removed from the neonatal ward in summer 2016. The decision came after concerns had been raised by colleagues over the deaths of infants in her care.

Ms Rees told The Times: “People say she’s not emotional. Trust me, she is emotional. I know that they say psychopaths are clever. But if she was acting she deserves an Oscar because she was so convincing.”
