BREAKING: Keir Starmer to host main Ukraine summit as Trump continues insults at Zelensky
Keir Starmer is set to host a second major Ukraine summit this weekend after key talks between Donald Trump ‘s White House and Zelensky’s officials.
It follows weeks of frantic diplomacy after a breakdown in relations between Washington and Kyiv over military aid and intelligence sharing. The PM, who has been keen to ease tensions after Zelensky and Trump publicly clashed in the Oval office, has invited 20 countries to the virtual talks on Saturday.
Mr Starmer last hosted European leaders just over a week ago at Lancaster House in London and warned the West was at a “crossroads in history”. He warned at the time: “This is not a moment for more talk. It’s time to act. Time to step up and lead and to unite around a new plan for a just and enduring peace.”
Mr Starmer is pushing to hammer out a peacekeeping plan for Ukraine by the end of the week ahead of crunch talks to end the war on Tuesday. Downing Street signalled progress was being made on a blueprint with European allies, which would then be presented to the US President.
Zelensky was due to travel to Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ahead of talks between senior US and Ukrainian officials. Overnight, Mr Trump said the US had “just about” ended a suspension of intelligence sharing with Ukraine, and that he expects good results from the upcoming talks.
But he continued his attacks on President Zelensky on Sunday, telling Fox News: “It was like taking candy from a baby, what he did. He’s a smart guy and he’s a tough guy and he took money out of this country under Biden like candy from a baby. It was so easy.” He added: “I just don’t think he’s grateful.”
