Chaos at main UK airport as automotive explodes in tunnel with diversions in place

Passengers at Heathrow Airport are facing huge delays after a car fire caused chaos. According to reports, an electric car was seen in flames inside one of the airport’s tunnels this morning.

The M4 southbound between junctions 4 and 4a were closed, with two fire engines deployed to fight the fires inside the tunnel which connects Terminals 1, 2 and 3 by car. The car was later seen entirely destroyed. A diversion is in place between M25 J14 and M4 J3 to get to the airport.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “Due to an earlier vehicle fire, road access to Terminals 2 and 3 is partially restricted. Passengers are advised to leave more time travelling to the airport and use public transport where possible. Latest updates can be found on Heathrow.com and our social media channels. We apologise for the disruption caused.”

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said: “We were called just before 3am to an electric vehicle fire inside the east ramp. We sent two fire engines to the scene but once the fire was extinguished the car was completely destroyed.

“The fire was under control by 3.45am. London Ambulance were called to the scene but there are no reports of any injuries. We left the scene at 4.30am.”

While no official statement had been made by Heathrow Airport officials, a spokesman did apologies to a customer who claimed one runway was closed on social media.

A spokesman said: “Apologies for the delay to your flight today, Brian. Please be assured that we’re doing our best to have you on your way as soon as possible. Corry.”

Corry was asked why it was closed but no response was given.

It was also confirmed that disruptions between Paddington Station and Heathrow’s Terminal 4 would take place, but that has now returned to normal.
