Virgil van Dijk says ‘they’re mendacity’ as Liverpool star provides bombshell contract replace
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has cast doubt on his Anfield future by admitting not even he knows if he will play in the Champions League for the Reds again – and says anybody who says different is a liar.
Arne Slot’s side were knocked out of the competition on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after a 1-1 draw on aggregate on Tuesday night and with his contract set to end in the summer, talks have been taking place.
Van Dijk says his representatives are still in talks with his deal set to end on June 30. But asked if he will play in Europe’s top club competition for the Kop side ever again, the Holland international said: “I’ve no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely, I have no idea at the moment.
“Talks aren’t on hold, nothing’s on hold. I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go and that’s my full focus.
“If there is news you guys will know it. I don’t even know myself. Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes, but that’s about it.

“At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they’re lying to your face.”
Ousmane Dembele’s early goal at Anfield saw Slot’s side eventually head to penalties as their Champions League hopes were ended by Luis Enrique’s PSG, who turned around a 1-0 first leg deficit.
Van Dijk’s contract situation is not the only one Liverpool are trying to solve at the moment, with star striker Mohamed Salah and England right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deals both also drawing to a close at the same time as Van Dijk.
Liverpool top the Premier League table and face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday in a bid to win their first silverware of the season, but Reds fans will be anxious for the future with the possibility of Slot’s star trio all walking away from the club at the end of this campaign.
For now, though, one thing is clear. Van Dijk is solely focused on finishing the season strongly, even with the Champions League prize now out of reach.
