Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick to lead Manchester United into the Europa League quarter-finals after a 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad.

United fell behind inside 10 minutes as Mikel Oyarzabal scored a penalty for the visitors after Matthijs de Ligt was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box.

But United hit back six minutes later with their own spot-kick, with Bruno Fernandes keeping his cool to bring his side level.

Five minutes into the second half, another penalty was awarded to the hosts, and Fernandes sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put United ahead in the tie. Sociedad substitute Jon Aramburu was then sent off just seven minutes after coming on for a last-man challenge on Patrick Dorgu, before Fernandes completed his hat-trick and Diogo Dalot fired home a late fourth goal.

But who were the standout stars at Old Trafford?

Mail Sport’s AADAM PATEL was on hand to rate the players…

Man United

Andre Onana (6) – One of the players namechecked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe as transfer deals that Manchester United were still paying off. Made some simple saves in the first half but was sent the wrong way by Mikel Oyarzabal for Real Sociedad’s penalty. Didn’t have a save to make after the break.

Noussair Mazraoui (6.5) – Another reliable performance by one of the more consistent performers in this United side. Such a force down the right hand side and it’s almost as if he never runs out of energy.

Matthijs de Ligt (6) – Unlucky to give away the early penalty but he can have no complaints about the decision. Defensively solid after that and came close to scoring too.

Ayden Heaven (7) – The 18-year-old was preferred ahead of Victor Lindelof in what was a huge show of faith by Ruben Amorim. Did not look out of his place on his first start for the club. What a talent.

Diogo Dalot (7) – Can’t fault his work-rate. Got himself into some dangerous positions but like Dorgu on the other side, needs to improve in the final third. Took his goal in injury time really well.

Casemiro (7.5) – Another one of the namechecked players. Rolled back the years with a solid display, playing some wonderful passes and was defensively solid too. Replaced in the 79th minute.

Bruno Fernandes (9) – Where would Manchester United be without him? A class apart from the rest. Took both penalties brilliantly before getting his hat-trick with a quality finish. The match-winner again.

Patrick Dorgu (8) – An all-action display that was full of excitement. Constantly caused a nuisance and could be a real problem if he improves his decision making in the final third. Knew exactly what he was doing to get the penalty and was the reason why Sociedad went down to ten men.

Joshua Zirkzee (8) – One of his finer performances in a United shirt, with some seriously impressive moments as he caused problems for Sociedad all night long. The only thing missing was a goal.

Alejandro Garnacho (6.5) – Not one of his better displays attacking-wise but he still got an assist, teeing up Fernandes for his third. Worked hard all night.

Rasmus Hojlund (6) – So short of confidence and his composure in front of goal was that of a man who hasn’t scored since December. Credit for winning the first penalty and getting the assist for Dalot but he missed numerous chances. For a £72M striker, has to do better.

Substitutions

Toby Collyer (5.5) – Replaced Casemiro in the 79th minute.

Christian Eriksen (5.5) – On for Joshua Zirkzee in the 88th minute.
