Jordan Henderson‘s unexpected return to the England squad has sparked fierce debate among fans, with many questioning new manager Thomas Tuchel‘s decision to bring back the veteran midfielder.
The 34-year-old, who last played for England in 2023, was omitted from Gareth Southgate‘s Euro 2024 squad and appeared to have fallen out of the national team picture.
However, Tuchel’s first squad selection – released on Friday morning – has seen Henderson recalled, alongside other surprise inclusions like Marcus Rashford and Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Henderson’s recall is arguably the most debated decision from Tuchel’s squad announcement. Once a mainstay in England’s midfield, his international career seemed over after a tumultuous year.
Having left Liverpool for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia last summer, Henderson faced significant backlash. His time in the Saudi Pro League lasted just six months before he made a January switch to Ajax, hoping to reinvigorate his career in Europe.
Since joining the Eredivisie side, Henderson has played regularly, but his performances have not stood out. Therefore, many England fans were surprised by his return.

Social media erupted after the announcement, with fans voicing their confusion and frustration over Henderson’s inclusion – especially with younger midfielders like Adam Wharton, James Garner, and Kobbie Mainoo emerging as potential options.
One Twitter user summed up the general sentiment: ‘Henderson being recalled has to be one of the strangest England selections in years. What has he actually done at Ajax to warrant this?!’
Another fan questioned whether the recall was based on merit: ‘We’re supposed to be moving forward with fresh ideas, yet Henderson is back? Feels like we’re stuck in 2021.’
Some pointed out the contradiction in excluding Trent Alexander-Arnold while recalling Henderson. One fan wrote: ‘No Trent because he’s injured, fair enough. But a half-fit Trent offers more in midfield than Henderson does right now.’
Others were more direct in their criticism, writing: ‘Henderson wasn’t good enough for England 18 months ago. He then went to Saudi, flopped, came back, and now he’s suddenly good enough again? Make it make sense.’
Even some Manchester United supporters, typically indifferent to Henderson, were puzzled by the decision. One fan joked: ‘Honestly, I’d rather see Jonjo Shelvey back in the squad at this point.’
Others simply wrote: ‘Tuchel out’, ‘Jordan Henderson over Adam Wharton? Jesus Christ, is Southgate back?’ and ‘Jordan Henderson, sack him immediately’.

Despite the overwhelming criticism, a few fans defended Tuchel’s decision. One fan argued that experience still has value: ‘People are acting like Henderson is completely washed. He’s still playing regularly at a high level. Tuchel probably wants leadership in the squad.’
Another fan, pointed out England’s lack of midfield depth: ‘Beyond Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, we’re actually quite light in midfield. Henderson at least gives us an option.’
