Can you inform the £40 silk pyjamas from the £550 set? Here’s the skilled information to one of the best posh PJs on the excessive avenue that each lady needs, by trend editor CAMILLA RIDLEY-DAY
Embarrassed to open the door when the postie calls with your latest online haul? Looking good is often different to feeling good when it comes to nightwear, and what we cosy up in isn’t always what we want to be seen in on the doorstep.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Upping our pyjama game is easy given there’s something for every budget on the High Street…
Fashion has fallen so hard for silk and satin pyjamas that celebrities, including Gigi Hadid, have embraced the nightwear-as-eveningwear trend.
Personally, I don’t wear silk co-ords outside the house, but I do want to look stylishly put together even when an unexpected caller pops round.
This is a look that screams luxury – but doesn’t have to cost you. Some of the less pricey versions look so good, it’s hard to tell the difference.
At the top end, Derek Rose’s pyjamas (£550 for a set, derek-rose.com) are an investment that will last for years. Made from the purest Italian silk, with mother of pearl buttons and an option to personalise, they’re produced in Cheshire by this family-owned company that prides itself on sustainability.
Rest easy and keep your conscience clear with The White Company’s silk rose pyjamas (£200 set, thewhitecompany.com) made from Bluesign silk, meaning it’s produced with minimum environmental impact.
One hundred per cent silk has a beautiful weight and drape, and John Lewis’s charcoal grey set (£130, johnlewis.com) has the feel of a classic.
Real silk is ideal for hot sleepers, too, and is hypoallergenic. Also in the middle of the market is Intimissimi. Go for an unconventional colour like this olive slip (£135, intimissimi.com) with lace detailing, and add an ultrafine cashmere mix jumper (£45) for a more covered-up yet sexy look.
If you like Olivia von Halle’s bold prints but can’t afford them (her PJs go up to £690), Chelsea Peers versions (£55 for a set, chelseapeers.com) are an affordable dead ringer. Made of recycled satin, with more stretch than silk allows, they come in long and short styles. This giraffe print hits all the right notes.
Or put your trust in M&S (marksandspencer.com). Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s collection keeps it simple, which is no bad thing in a silk PJ.
Her range is the longest standing collaboration M&S has done to date, and it’s easy to see why when she serves up a flavour of supermodel style at purse-friendly prices.
This subtle buff satin set (£40, marksandspencer.com) is finished with elegant black piping and has a slouchy Sunday morning vibe. Inclusive sizing from 6-22 means you can get your perfect fit.
Finally, if budget is your priority you can’t beat Primark’s robe (£20, primark.com) and nightgown (£16) for a glamorous option if a date night away is on the cards. There’s no real silk in these, but that brings practical benefits: you can sling them in the washing machine, for example, plus they’ll never need an iron. Extra time in bed – hurrah!
