Newcastle United fans partied long into the night as 70 years of waiting for a domestic trophy ended.

Eddie Howe’s side lifted the League Cup for the first time in the club’s history after they beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley on Sunday. Goals from hometown hero Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were enough to ensure Federico Chiesa’s injury time goal was nothing but a consolation.

The Toon Army travelled down to the capital in their droves ahead of the cup final, hooking up at Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden as the excitement built ahead of their chance at redemption after suffering Wembley heartbreak two years earlier against Manchester United.

But this time, they got the job done as jubilant scenes returned to Covent Garden and back home at St James’ Park.

Many of those fans who didn’t make the 600-mile round journey south, descended on St James’ Park to meet up with fellow supporters and join in the celebrations outside the Magpies’ home.

Pictures showed fans filling the concourse outside of the ground and flooding the staircases to get a good view of the celebrations.

Videos also showed fans chanting while others climbed on statues to put scarves and shirts of the current heroes on them.

Streets of Newcastle

Fans took to the streets of Newcastle, rolling in and out of pubs, while those attempting to get places were stuck in gridlocked traffic.

Cars were left queuing at busy junctions and roads as fans partied along the streets.

But the drivers stuck in the traffic couldn’t help but join in as they sounded their horns in celebration.

Covent Garden

After soaking in the pre-match tension at Covent Garden, Geordies returned to the London landmark to bask in their victory.

Videos showed fans chanting in the surrounding streets while other supporters outside of the renowned Punch & Judy pub cheered as an inflatable trophy was lifted in the middle of the crowd.

Thousands of ticketless Geordies made their way to London not wanting to miss out on the history-making occasion. But some were lucky enough to grab a place in the nearby Wembley Boxpark to watch the final alongside fellow supporters in front of the big screens.

Famously seen when England fans launch pints into the air celebrating goals at major international tournaments, it was a Geordie takeover of the box with beer flowing, and ultimately flying when Burn and Isak scored.

Scenes continued after the full-time whistle too as Newcastle stars revelled in their triumph at Boxpark, with Alan Shearer also joining in while Bruno Guimaraes led celebrations from above the balcony.
