All we learn about vogue retailer relaunch as excessive road comeback teased
Topshop could be making a long-awaited return to the high street two years after the fashion retailer’s stores in the UK were closed down – and here’s everything we know so far
Topshop has teased a high street return after closing their physical doors in 2020 following the business going into administration.
While it was still available online and through the online retail giant ASOS, many shoppers called for the store to return to shopping centres across the UK. After a break, it appears Topshop bosses are gearing up for a return, as the website appears to host a hub of activity. When clicking on the page, shoppers are greeted with a “Coming soon” teaser – with little information.
Over on Instagram, where their bio now reads “We Missed You Too”, Topshop shared a trio of posts that have caused plenty of speculation. The first video post features models walking on a rooftop, with a massive ‘TOPSHOP’ sign looming large.
Following this, the screen cuts to black and “We Missed You Too” pops up. To the caption, the added “WE’VE BEEN LISTENING.”, reports the Mirror.
Several fans of the brand took to the comment section to express their excitement. One fan wrote: “What in the Topshop is going on?” while another added: “Millennials everywhere are screaming, crying and throwing up. I’m one of them.”
And a third couldn’t contain their excitement: “Shut the front door! ! ! I fear Gen Z aren’t going to understand what this means to us millennials.”
For the eagle-eyed followers, this ‘return’ might not come as a surprise. Topshop has been dropping hints of a comeback earlier in the month with a series of mysterious posts and a teasing caption: “Watch this space.”
Each post showcased a video loop of pink-lettered slogans on mirrors, one reading: “Your era, your Topshop.”
Subsequently, two additional videos were shared indicating that the enigmatic venture will kick off with conceptual artist Russ Jones. Taking to Instagram, the artist shared: “I’m normally shy about collaborations. This upcoming project felt different.”
He continued: “Championed by a titan of the retail industry,” and revealed, “With a brand that will always be iconic. I’m partnering with one of the most iconic British brands to ever grace our high street. Growing up, I couldn’t afford to shop here. Now, we’re working together.”
This revelation follows ASOS’s sale of a 75% stake in Topshop in September 2024 to Danish fashion conglomerate Heartlands, who have been dropping hints about a potential revival of physical stores. While details remain under wraps, there’s optimism in the air as ASOS CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte previously mentioned he would “not rule out any option to grow Topshop, and if that includes a physical presence, then we will not ignore it.”
The Topshop team has seen been switched up recently, with Michelle Wilson stepping up as the new managing director of Topshop and Topman back in February. They’ve also recruited Moses Rashid, the mind behind the sneaker resale empire The Edit Ldn, to take the reins as their marketing director.
Over on LinkedIn, Rashid shared: “I’m pleased to announce I have joined Topshop and Topman as global marketing director. Topshop was an institution for many of us, it was known for being innovative, rebellious and inspirational, so to be afforded this opportunity is truly exciting.”
Previously, Topshop was a high street giant with 70 stores across the UK, boasting a mega flagship store on London’s Oxford Street. But the fashion brand went into administration in 2020, caught up in the downfall of Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia group.
Fast forward to the next year, and ASOS swooped in to save the day, relaunching Topshop as an online-only brand after forking out a cool £265 million.
