Resurfaced footage of MMA star Ilima-Lei Macfarlane’s brutal knockout of a ‘soccer mom’ is attracting fresh interest on social media.
Macfarlane made quite the splash in her professional debut a decade ago when she was paired against the 0-3 Katie Castro for Xplode Fight Series.
The unsanctioned bout lasted on 10 seconds before Castro was face down on the mat and the referee was signalling for medical attention. The brutal exchange has been described as one of the biggest mismatches in the sport’s history.
But, as Macfarlane explained in an interview on the ‘Keep it Aloha’ Podcast last year, that level of fighting attracts participants who have no business being in the octagon.
‘There’s different levels to fighting for sure,’ she said. ‘There are those that take it seriously and actually train. Others don’t take it seriously but they’re still okay
‘And then there are those that think that they can fight and they do bar brawls or something. I’m pretty sure she was part of that crew. Bar brawl crews that think they can fight. There are plenty of dummies like that.’

Macfarlane explained that the fight’s location – on a Native American reservation in San Diego – allowed for the two to meet.
It is the only reasonable explanation for why Castro was permitted to enter the ring with Macfarlane, given she had lost both of her previous fights within 30 seconds of the first round.
‘The paramedics told us afterwards that she s*** her pants,’ Macfarlane continued. ‘It ended up going viral months later.’
Viewers coming to the clip for the first time have reacted in shock to the bout. One account on X wrote: ‘Who let their mom get KO’d by a professional MMA fighter called ‘The Eliminator’.
Another said: ‘Who ever let this fight go down needs to be arrested.’
Castro wisely decided to end her combat career after the crushing defeat and, according to Macfarlane, recovered and became a nurse.
Macfarlane added: ‘I used to feel shame about it but now I think it’s funny.’
