Awkward! MSNBC Makes Chuck Schumer Watch A Montage That Rips Him Apart

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was made to watch a montage Tuesday of criticisms from members of his own party, after helping Republicans in Congress pass a spending bill to avert a government shutdown — rather than try to negotiate.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes played the footage, which included comments from Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), Sen. Chris Murphy (Conn.), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

“Chuck and I disagree, as it relates to the approach and outcome,” said Jeffries in the clip, with Ocasio-Cortez stating: “I think there is a deep sense of outrage and betrayal. And this is not just about progressive Democrats, this is across the board, the entire party.”

“I would have liked to see when Chuck Schumer had leverage here, to say, ‘We need A, B, C and D for the Democratic Party,’ and force the Republicans to meet him halfway on those issues,” said Shapiro in an excerpt from his recent interview on “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

The GOP bill ultimately passed Friday with the help of 10 Democratic senators, including Schumer, who opted to give President Donald Trump and his billionaire adviser Elon Musk new legal authority on how to spend taxpayer money rather than allow a shutdown.

When asked Tuesday whether he’s reconsidered that choice in wake of the “enormous backlash,” Schumer said he knew it would “get a lot of flak,” but argued that “there were two choices only” because Republicans “weren’t going to negotiate with us.”

“It would be nice if we had a third choice, we tried to get that third choice with the 30-day extension that [Sen.] Patty Murray [D-Wash.] tried,” Schumer told Hayes, “to get some moderate, more moderate Republicans on the appropriations committee go along.”

“They wouldn’t,” he concluded. “So … the only two choices were these choices.”

The senator postponed several of his book tour dates this week over resulting security concerns, and is instead doing damage control on shows like “The View,” where Schumer maintained a federal shutdown would’ve been worse than handing Trump more power.

Many of his colleagues disagreed, however, as is evident by the video Schumer endured.

“I think the only way that we are going to be effective as a caucus is if we change our tactic,” said Murphy in the footage, with Pelosi concluding: “I myself don’t give away anything for nothing, and I think that’s what happened the other day.”
