Liverpool have released a new update about Ryan Gravenberch’s withdrawal from the Netherlands squad due to another injury scare for the Reds.
The young midfielder – an integral part of Liverpool’s march towards the Premier League title – was involved in the national team setup, joining fellow Liverpool players Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo for the UEFA Nations League clashes with Spain.
Unfortunately, the Dutch side announced on Wednesday evening that Gravenberch would miss the tie after picking up an injury during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle United.
In a big blow to the Reds, the official Netherlands account shared on X: “Ryan Gravenberch has left the Oranje’s training camp this evening.”Adding concern for fans, they stated: “The midfielder is still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend that prevents him from playing in the matches against Spain. Take care, Ryan!”
Liverpool have since provided additional details on the incident, referring to it as a ‘fitness issue’, reports the Liverpool Echo.
An official statement from the club said: “Ryan Gravenberch has departed the Netherlands camp and will not be involved in their fixtures this week.”“The Liverpool midfielder had linked up with his country, alongside Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk, for a UEFA Nations League double-header versus Spain on Thursday and Sunday.
“The 22-year-old will be assessed upon his return to Merseyside, with the Reds back in action when they host Everton in the Premier League on April 2.”
The defeat at Wembley to Newcastle marked the end of a tough week for Arne Slot’s team, who were knocked out of the Champions League last-16 stage just five days earlier after losing to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shoot-out.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured during that match and consequently did not join the England squad. However, there are whispers that the right-back could be back in action before April ends.Harvey Elliott sustained an injury following a rough tackle by Magpies midfielder Joelinton during Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, but the midfielder has been spotted training with the England Under-21s this week.Liverpool players Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton are all still out of action due to injuries. Despite these setbacks, Liverpool maintains a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League as they prepare to face their Merseyside rivals Everton at Anfield.
