Luke Humphries ‘silliness’ stuns followers in Michael van Gerwen Premier League Darts defeat
Luke Humphries was left red-faced after making a costly mistake in his Premier League Darts quarter-final defeat to Michael van Gerwen on Thursday evening
Luke Humphries was labelled as “ridiculous’ by Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle after making a bizarre error in his Premier League defeat to Michael van Gerwen.
The World No.1 went out at the quarter-final stage in Cardiff, blowing a 3-0 lead against ‘MVG’ as he lost 6-4. During which, he made a costly decision when given a chance to take the match into a deciding leg.
Trailing 5-4, Humphries stepped up to the oche with 80 left on the board, with Van Gerwen needing just 25. Rather than aim for treble 20, the Englishman instead went for an audacious double double checkout on tops.
However, he was too high with his first dart and then strayed into double-five with his second. Trying to salvage matters, he then only hit double 18 to leave himself 52.
Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle was left perplexed by the World No.1’s decision, saying: “I cannot believe what I’ve just seen. He knows that is ridiculous. Michael van Gerwen will seriously want to get this.” Co-commentator John Part labelled the decision as “silliness.”
Van Gerwen returned to the oche and duly made Humphries pay, hitting single nine to take out double eight. The Dutchman let out a roar as he sealed the 6-4 victory and booked his place in the semi-final against Chris Dobey.
The Dutchman produced a breathtaking performance that saw Mardle ask “What year is this?” with Van Gerwen playing darts reminiscent of his dominance during the late 2010s.
