Renowned lexicographer, Susie Dent, has coined a new term, ‘Eufloria’, which perfectly encapsulates the feeling of euphoria that comes with receiving flowers. The word is clever combination of the prefix ‘eu’ meaning ‘good’ or ‘abundant’ and ‘floria’ – a nod to the Roman goddess of flowers, Flora.

According to Susie, ‘Eufloria’ captures the unique joy and happiness that comes with receiving flowers, a feeling that has been scientifically proven to be a universal experience. In fact, a recent study found that receiving flowers can lift a person’s mood for up to four days, with 85% of people reporting an instant boost in happiness.

The study revealed that 61% of people are more likely to pay compliments to others after receiving flowers, while 77% believe it makes them nicer to their partner.

To celebrate the launch of the new word, Moonpig has created a limited edition bouquet, aptly named ‘The Eufloria’, designed to spread joy this Mother’s Day.

Partnering with the card company, Susie said: “I was delighted to be involved in the search for a word that captures a feeling we all recognise.

“Data shows that flowers have a measurably positive impact on our mood, and ‘eufloria’ gives us an opportunity to articulate that.”

The study also revealed that a lucky 21% receive flowers as a gift from friends and family every few months, with 54% most likely to be gifted them by a partner. Roses were crowned the nation’s favourite (48%), followed by tulips (28%), sunflowers (21%) and lilies (19%).

On average, people typically display them for nine days before deciding to discard them. Moreover, 12% go the extra mile and press or dry them to keep as a memento.

Four in 10 of those with a mum or mother figure confess they only buy them flowers every couple of months, sometimes less. However, Mother’s Day seems to be an exception as 78% are likely to opt for a bouquet as their gift – with men more likely to do this than women – but only just.

Commenting on the OnePoll.com data, a spokesperson at Moonpig stated: “There’s something so uniquely special and heart-warming about receiving flowers as a gift, which is why we wanted to create a word to sum up this feeling.

“Whether you’re buying a bouquet for a special occasion like Mother’s Day, or even those just because moments, flowers have a way of brightening those personal moments, lifting spirits and making loved ones feel truly special.”
