Alisson suffers ‘suspected concussion’ in brutal conflict as Liverpool harm disaster worsens
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to be substituted with ‘suspected concussion’ in Brazil’s win over Colombia as Arne Slot counts the cost of yet another injury
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker was substituted after suffering a suspected concussion in Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match win against Colombia.
Just 12 minutes from the end, the shot-stopping marvel crashed into Tottenham’s ex-defender Davinson Sanchez. That spelled the end of the match for the Premier League’s top keeper, adding to the Reds’ mounting injury crisis.
Despite this, Brazil edged out a 2-1 win in the match’s dying seconds thanks to Real Madrid‘s Vinicius Junior, with Liverpool’s Luis Diaz levelling for Colombia after Barcelona’s Raphinha’s opening strike.
Later that evening, Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar told CNN Brazil about the injury the goalkeeper sustained at the game in Brasilia, when Alisson and the Colombia defender knocked heads as Alisson punched away an incoming cross.
Lasmar provided some reassurance about the injury but stated that the 32-year-old would have to undergo some checks before he’s declared fit to play.
“Becker suffered a trauma to the head region, he was replaced by a suspected concussion. Now we will do all the CBF protocol, it will undergo recommended imaging tests, a computed tomography, then a resonance with diffusion,” reports the Liverpool Echo.
“If all the tests are normal, we’ll follow up and do a cognitive test. And then we will evaluate the player. In the possibility that everything is normal, we will make a sequence of observations in the coming days. Today, we will do the tests, all the necessary evaluations.”
He said: “Alisson is normal, with no complaints. He reported no fainting and no memory loss. He thought it was a little slower. In this complaint, the recommended is the replacement of the player.”
Brazil are set to face Argentina on Wednesday (March 26). Liverpool, however, won’t be back in action until the following week when they host Everton in the Merseyside derby (April 2).
Liverpool’s Alisson wasn’t the only one causing concern. Ibrahima Konate was taken off at half-time during France’s Nations League match against Croatia after sustaining a knock, as reported by his national team’s official X account.
In another blow for Liverpool, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has had to pull out from the Netherlands squad due to what Liverpool have termed a ‘fitness issue’.
