Lewis Hamilton lands first Ferrari pole with fastest-ever lap after ‘catastrophe’

Lewis Hamilton will be on pole for the sprint race in China.

Hamilton secured his first pole position for Ferrari in just the second race weekend of the 2025 season. The Brit also recorded a fastest-ever track lap time at the Shanghai International Circuit, with a 1:30.849.

After the session came to an end, Hamilton’s new race engineer, Riccardo Adami, delivered the good news to a shocked Hamilton, who was left “gobsmacked” by taking pole.

The two laughed in disbelief at how quickly Hamilton and Ferrari had turned their fortunes around after a nightmare Australian Grand Prix, which Hamilton called a “disaster”.

Hamilton finished +0.018 ahead of Max Verstappen, +0.080 in front of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and +0.208 ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc. Meanwhile, last week’s race winner Lando Norris qualified in P6 after aborting his final lap.
