Manchester United will be keeping a close eye on European football when the action resumes after the international break, and not just for their Europa League quarter-final clash with French side Lyon.

Ruben Amorim’s team are hoping to rescue their season in the Europa League, while over in the Champions League, Marcus Rashford is aiming to maintain his bright start at Aston Villa against Paris St-Germain. Meanwhile, Antony at Real Betis and Jadon Sancho at Chelsea are both hopeful of making it to the Conference League final.

The fact that three senior forwards have left United on loan deals in the last two transfer windows speaks volumes about the current state of the squad. However, at least a couple of these moves seem to be paying off and need to, as the Red Devils need to raise funds urgently.

Rashford has been turning heads at Villa Park, despite not yet finding the back of the net. He’s won over the fans, and Villa are seriously contemplating triggering the option to sign him on a permanent basis this summer – something unthinkable when the lifelong United fan from Manchester was banging in 30 goals for the Red Devils just three years ago.

Even if they opt not to, Rashford’s current form could open up other opportunities for him in the next transfer window. Barcelona was his preferred destination in January, and despite the Catalan club’s ongoing financial woes, they might consider making a move based on Rashford’s performances at Villa, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Antony has been impressing in La Liga, with four goals and four assists in just 11 appearances, nudging himself back into consideration for the Brazilian national team. The winger’s January loan to Betis did not come with an option to buy; however, Betis are keen on extending his stay for the 2025/26 season with another loan deal.

United, on the other hand, are looking for a permanent move rather than another short-term solution, as Antony’s current form is a reminder of the potential he realised at Ajax. If he continues his excellent performances, it seems likely that a queue of clubs will be ready to snap him up in the summer – another starling turn of events for a player United splashed out £72m on in 2022.

The Red Devils are understandably pleased with how those January transfers are panning out. With players boosting their sale value through solid performances, United could be looking at a £60million+ addition to their transfer kitty for a crucial first window under new management with Amorim.

What’s more, Jadon Sancho’s situation could inflate their budget even further. As things stand, Chelsea is contractually obliged to secure Sancho’s services for a fee thought to be between £20million and £25million. However, the Blues are rethinking that commitment.

There’s a penalty clause in the season-long loan agreement that would allow Chelsea to wriggle out of the buy requirement, albeit at a cost of paying United a “significant” sum. This setup has reportedly been dubbed a “win-win” by an Old Trafford insider, either delivering a financial windfall for United or returning the player to their ranks.

Sancho’s future at the club hangs in the balance. While not completely dismissing the possibility of his return to Amorim’s squad, tensions have been high, as evidenced by Sancho’s “freedom” comment on Rashford’s Instagram post featuring a Villa shirt. This is a player United invested £73m in just four years ago, with the intention he would be a mainstay of their team for years to come.

Chelsea are having second thoughts about their deal due to Sancho’s worrying dip in form, with only one goal contribution since September. This could shrink his market this summer, but any funds United receive from Chelsea might enable them to reduce their asking price.

Another option is loaning out Sancho, provided a club agrees to pay most of his salary, which could be for the last year of his contract in the 2025/26 season. Regardless of Chelsea’s final decision on fulfilling their obligation, United stand to gain financially.

This situation could still result in a lucrative summer for United, especially with three major loanees in the picture.
