Full listing of High Street chains shutting shops as professional warns ‘worst is but to return’
The UK’s high streets have already seen tens of thousands of closures, but experts are warning that more are almost certainly still to come, including the demise of some major household names
The UK high street is in a state of turmoil, with over 13,000 shops closing in the past year alone, and experts are warning that this year could see even more retailers permanently shutting their doors. Some of the country’s biggest names are being hit, with more than 200 shops and banks already closing in the first three months of the year.
Experts believe the closures are driven by online competition, high rents, and falling consumer spending, leaving retailers struggling to keep their flagship stores open.
Clothing stores have been among the worst affected, with New Look, Select Fashion, Monki, and Quiz Clothing all closing multiple locations. More than half of this year’s closures so far have come from fashion retailers alone.
WHSmith has shut stores in Basingstoke, Bolton, Bournemouth, and other locations. However, the company is expanding into travel retail, planning 110 new stores in airports, train stations, and hospitals, as well as 37 new Toys “R” Us shop-in-shops.
Homebase has closed 33 stores, with more at risk. Some former Homebase locations have been converted into The Range, Wickes, or other retailers.
Select Fashion has shut 35 stores, with closures in places such as Ashington, Hartlepool, Scunthorpe, and Wellingborough.
New Look has lost four stores and plans to close 26 in total, resulting in 350 job losses. Monki, owned by H&M, is shutting all seven of its UK stores, including branches in London, Manchester, and Newcastle.
Quiz Clothing entered administration in February and has closed 23 stores, leading to 200 job losses. Dobbies, SuperDry and Trespass also face closures.
Over 60 bank branches have already closed this year as customers shift to online banking. Major banks like Lloyds, Halifax, Barclays, and Bank of Scotland are shutting branches, with Santander recently announcing the closure of 95 more locations.
The crisis is set to deepen as new pressures emerge. Employers are facing higher national insurance contributions, increasing staffing costs. A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce found most firms expect to raise prices over the next three months.
Zelf Hussain, a restructuring partner at PwC UK, warned that retailers are in for a tough year. “While household finances are improving, consumer confidence remains cautious. With payroll costs rising and higher business rates coming in April, profit margins will stay under pressure,” he said.
Experts at the Centre for Retail Research predict that up to 17,350 shops could shut this year, with independent retailers making up the bulk of closures.
